Oh My or Thrive! Rose

Hi all. Not new to these boards at all, been lurking for years, but this is my first time posting. I have wanted a true red rose for the front of my house, but need strong disease resistance. I was at the nursery yesterday and found Oh My roses, which I had been on the lookout for after reading about them online. Then, as I was loading them on my cart, I saw the Thrive! Rose, same color, covered in blooms, and ended up buying those instead. I like the flower form on Oh My better, but preferred the fact that Thrive was covered in blooms. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? There is limited information online. I fear I have fallen victim to the instant gratification bug! The gentleman at the nursery said they are similar in disease resistance and size. Scent doesn't matter to me here, but I do want something that blooms heavily and frequently. I am in the Charlotte, NC area. Any feedback you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Can't do anything about it now in any case. I don't know what forum you were reading. My recommendation for any one who might ask me is to prune when the forsythia is in bloom. Sometimes that is in March, sometimes that is in early April. No forsythia is in bloom here yet. Even though it was in the 60's here last weekend, no pruning here. We schedule the pruning of our community beds the first weekend in April, just to try to set a date. Each variety, each plant has its own needs. "Austins" is too generic. Some like a hard pruning, some don't. You'll find out over time what is best. If you didn't prune enough, you can go back and trim more off later. Don't obsess about it. Oh, and some just aren't good bloomers until they have matured, 3 - 4 years. Some just aren't good bloomers at all. Paul Z. has some videos posted, one is on pruning. It's true. The compliments and appreciation are probably like the proverbial iceberg - 99% below the water and invisible/unknown. I got a postcard in the mail this winter addressed to Rose Gardener from a lady in NC who vacations here often and walks through my neighborhood. She said she was a rose gardener for years and knows the hard work that gos into it and thanked me for the beautiful roses. (Sent a note back to her & received another from her.) Like Buford, delivery people and repairmen always mention the garden, but then it is rather in-your-face. Thanks everyone for your contributions to beautifying the world - one garden at a time. Hi, I'm in Wailua too and would be glad to commiserate... I also have a garden at my school in Puhi. (You may have written me, someone did recently, but I can't find the email). It's not impossible to grow tomatoes, just challenging :) The soil is generally terrible - I'm slowly building raised beds and filling them with compost, manure, every good thing I can find. I have to add calcium (chalk dust) or I get blossom end rot, and I add iron chelate, and water a lot when it's dry. variety matters - Roma often get wilt, Healani much better. you can write me directly to coralreefka at gmail.

It's helpful to know I'm in good company! I've never seen anything like this rust outbreak in my garden. And nothing will move a rose out of my garden faster than Cheeto leaves! My RdR is mature, maybe close to 15 years in my garden. It's one of the first roses I planted and has always been super clean, but now it's super icky. I hope I managed to strip all the fungus. At least rust is a helpful shade of neon orange. Hard to miss! I even found some speckles on Tradescant and The Prince as well as Tamora! The weirdest discovery is what I DIDN'T find: rust on Abraham Darby. He rusted earlier (as always), and I stripped the infected leaves as the fungus presented itself. But now, smack in the middle of the big epidemic, AD only has his usual defoliating blackspot. Really?! Locals drive around with bumper stickers that say "Keep Portland Weird." These are both very new roses and there may not be many people growing them yet so information about them is probably limited to what the growers, in this case Weeks for Oh My and Star for Thrive, have provided for them. The only way to know for sure is to grow them yourself and see how they do in your garden.

Thank you both for your feedback! I think I will go back to the nursery and pick up an Oh My! and see how it does. The blooms on this one are so pretty, just need to see how many they put out.
