Dumb Question, Please dont laugh

I am researching the best way to keep some veggies and herbs etc growing all winter and of course the main point was that some things need the same temps as outside to stay and become productive. The question I have is if stuff is INSIDE the GH, is it reasonable to say they are getting any amount of sunlight? of course it's not direct but indirect. Or is it really not an equivalent to sunlight at all, but just heat?

I often get better growth in the bright but diffused light inside the GH than I do outdoors.

My "pet" Gardenia, that bloomed lightly but fairly regularly the garden all summer is once again blooming it's head off in the GH and the light in there is diffused by super heavy bubble on the inside and a heavy, solar pool cover outside.

I have never been able to grow herbs well on a sunny windowsill in the house, and they always seem to be too hot and dry or too wet and cool to do much in the garden, but I have a hanging basket simply brimming with curley parsley out in the GH that looks better now than it did out in the open with lots of sun, so go figure. LOL!

As this will be your first winter with it, you probably just need to experiment to see what grows best in your particular GH conditions.

If you have clear glazing like polycarbonate or glass or even slightly translucent glazing like "clear" fiberglass, you should get enough light.

You can get herbicides which kill grasses but not broad leaved plants and vice versa. But you can't get herbicides which kill only weeds amongst vegetables. Many vegetables are in the same families as weeds, eg dandelions and lettuce, cabbages and bitter cress, carrots and Queen Annes Lace etc. They are too genetically similar to be selectively targetted. And, as luvahydrangea says, why would you spray toxic chemicals around your food? Weed and hoe, mulch and watch. Make sure you dig out deep rooted weeds, just pulling the tops won't do the job. That's gardening. And, as kerriann says, try to id your weeds. Different weeds respond to different treatment.

take a pen.. and write .. ON THE LEAVES ... the name of the plant ... water is OK for less than 24 hours ... otherwise ... dampen some potting media or mulch .. and shove all of them.. TOGETHER.. into one large pot.. and leave it in the cold garage ... you did not mention if they are leafed out ... they can stay in one pot for upwards of a week easily .. presuming the garage stays rather cool ... and just like a tree.. ONLY the roots in water ... in fact.. 1/2 inch of water.. set the plants in .. then crumple some newspaper to keep them humid ... they dont really need to be submersed ... its not that they need all that much water.. its just that you dont want the roots to dry out ... if they came wrapped in plastic.. i would remove that ... they need air also .... the ONLY stupid question.. is the UNASKED question ... we would NEVER laugh at a reasonable question ... ken

I'm back, This is addicting! I agree I do need to get a different yarn. This one is pretty, but I can't see the stitches well enough to tell if I am really doing it right. Also the yarn is loose so I keep hooking / snagging through the yarn. It is frustrating me. I am feeling less clumsy holding everything but I can tell I'll probably change the way I do everything a few times. I am a little confused when I get to the end and have to turn around an go the other way. I'm not really sure if I am doing it right. It looks fine, but what do I know? I've worked on a couple different stitches. I had a hard time with the half double crochet, but am really comfortable with the double crochet. Is there any one stitch you would recommend I get good at first? Suse- Thanks for that link. I found out that I don't have the right media player to view the video, but that is easy enough to fix. There is a lot of information there. And, about that CAT.... It is a really unsettling feeling to be focused on this, then look up and see Stevie with HUGE black eyes and a swirling tail. You just know that in a half second you're going to be in a lot of trouble. Thanks you guys!

Hi, I'm posting this question here because the subject line aptly fits,wink. I am very new to using a greenhouse, my husband bought me a used 8'x14' one we got it set up at the end of summer and were using the shade cloth at that time. My question is would the shade cloth help keep the heat in or would it just block more of the sun (do I take it off or leave it on?)

I take my shade cloths off for winter plant production. If you don't, the plants get leggy and are more prone to fungus and rots and things like botrytis and mildews. I put them back on May 1st, latest. shade cloth will do little to hold in heat, and in fact may impede it, as it cuts down on day time solar gain a lot and that's what makes a lot of the heat you want to keep in.
