I can tell you the people I know that grow it, love it. I may get it before I quit buying roses. I'm sorry I can't tell you more but I hope it does well for you.

A poster on the lake in Milwaukee found it mostly cane hardy.

I'm in a warmer zone, but I like it. It's hard to find a soft medium yellow that doesn't fade to white or pink. Wonderfully easy to grow, but needs deadheading.

My two get 4-5 feet tall and are always in bloom. They do bloom better if deadheaded. I really like that the color doesn't fade. I have to prune them back to about 18 inches each spring.
Mine are in a bed along side of the street. They get covered with plowed snow and are exposed to cold winter winds. Even with that abuse they grow well.

Very healthy. Died to ground, no protection, last winter (low temp negative 13 F); lots of new growth now.

I have 3 (purchased within several weeks of each other several years ago). One is great. One is O.K. The third may not still be alive.

Carefree Sunshine has been a guest here in my MN zone 4a garden for three or four years. It is a twiggy little runt that is smaller now than when it arrived. Last year it produced , maybe three flowers. It just can't seem to get established.

If it doesn't get going this year , it will be gone. Unless I just have a lemon, I can think of no reason to grow it in zone 4a. After all, Prairie Harvest and Julia Child will grow just fine here with minimal winter protection and both produce real flowers for lovers of yellow.

Carefree Sunshine has been very healthy in my garden. It does die back to the snow line or below. But it is vigorous and regrows very rapidly, one of the best in my garden in that regards. I'm thinking you just have a lemon Charles. In my garden, Prairie Harvest is the runt, not nearly as vigorous as CS or it's sister, Folksinger. Maybe my Prairie Harvest is a lemon also. I have Sun Flare which has been disease free for the last three years, but it never gets taller than a foot high, but it's hard to shovel prune it because it has been so healthy for me.

I think Carefree Sunshine is the easiest common yellow to grow in colder zones. It is vastly better than Sun Flare. If you are looking for a reliable show of yellow you can't go wrong with CS.

I was thinking Carefree Sunshine or April Moon. I found Carefree Sunshine locally, so I purchased. I hope I like it.

Anyone familiar with April Moon able to comment on the comparison of these two? I love yellow roses, so I wouldn't mind April Moon, though I don't know much about Buck roses, if I can find a spot for it in my garden.

Julia Child is pretty too..I also saw that one at a local nursery.

Kim, Both CS and April Moon are in our garden. AM blooms are fuller, more ht-like; pale yellow fading to white; AM is about as cold hardy as CS, gets slightly more bs. Julia Child was a disease disaster here.

kimcoco, my thinking was to put one in the front of the house bed for display and use the other 2 for breeding. The front of the house one is the "O.K." one.

The "good" one forms large hips, but so far (in spite of extensive utilization) I have not gotten anything worth introducing.

I know I am in a warmer zone than you are but I really love my Carefree Sunshine. It does grow a bit all over the place so requires pruning for shape but it is completely clean for me and blooms early and often.

Linrose I love your pictures-------I have Carefree Sunshine----It has been a great rose in my garden and it is very carefree.

I grew it when I lived in NW ohio--Toledo, zone 5. It had exceptional cane hardiness an grew taller than me (I'm 5 '3"). It bloomed profusely and didn't get blackspot. I didn't do a darn thing to it except prune in the spring and feed with Rose Tone once a month in warm months. I loved it and I highly recommend it. I'd get a new one for my yard here in Cleveland, but my lot is so small that I don't really have the room for more roses right now.

What about Charlotte? Austin claims it is hardy in zone 4.
