William Baffin - where to find locally (WI)?

I'm giving up on my Sombreuil and Don Juan. Had to cut them down to the ground after winter protection, and black spot / powdery mildew was an ongoing problem for me regardless of horticultural oils/sprays.

Decided on something hardier, wish I had known better...(don't believe those nurseries!)

Questions -

Am I risking black spot and powdery mildew on William Baffin if I plant him in the same location I'm pulling the other two out? Should I treat the soil?

Does anyone know where to find WB locally in Wisconsin, Milwaukee metro area?

Hello,
From what I understand, BS and PM live on the plant and not in the soil.
Via Google I found a nursery:"Minor's Garden Center", that may carry William,
you may want to give "Spring Valley Roses" a try.
Their web states they are sold out but you never know :o)

I know for sure that Jung's in Madison has William Baffin every year. I'm not sure about Milwaukee places. There is a list of nurseries on the Wisconsin forum and one of those might have it. Even nurseries that don't normally have roses often have the hardier climbing roses like this one in their shrub section.

You don't need to worry about the soil. Go ahead and plant William in the same spot and it will be fine. I have John Cabot which is closely related and that's the one rose that I never have to worry about blackspot or winterkill. If you're getting a lot of powdery mildew though then you might want to be sure it is getting enough sun there and enough air circulation.

Hi Veilchen, I'm in zone 6. Is Golden Celebration considered a climber? Or is that it can get big enough in warm zones to considered a climber? I think I've got somewhat of a micro climate going on...the location is against a stone wall that gets noon to afternoon sun. I'm guessing the wall would retain and radiate heat even in the winter (given sunshine). I mentioned to DW that I was going to chop down Willie and she said "No! I like how big and bushy and green it is!"...grrr...I can always find another spot for GC...my beds are slowly creeping inward from the edges of my yard :) I've also got Crown Princes Margareta on order..is it more of climber than GC? Thanks Eric

I would suggest trying to find a sawmill or tree trimming service company in your area. Or anyone with a chainsaw and a tree they can cut out a truck for you. Getting the bottom cut level maybe difficult depending on how large the trunk is.

When planted in the ground and established, it will make 8'-10' shoots from the base that will bypass the paltry first year growth, so it doesn't matter what you do with the extant stems--except don't prune too much and waste stored energy. This is a huge rose unsuited to pot culture, so I would try to decide where to put it and plant in the ground right now, before it leafs out.

My William Baffins are once blooming Monsters.
I have at least six and I love them but I think you should be warned if space is an issue.
