I am NOT going to kill them this time

With one thing and another, I have had a perfectly terrible time with mail order roses. (My fault, not the sellers.) I just got two roses from Chamblees and not only am I determined not to mess up this time, but I think I have a good chance of success. I got Mons. Tillier and Louis Phillippe, both fluffy and beautiful and robust. I will give them a few days to recover from shipping and then get them into the ground. Mons. Tillier has several flowers already open! Very exciting. Anyway, beautiful plants from Chamblees - yay!

Relax. Louis Philippe is an easy care rose. I have one growing under a large tree which receives no fertilizer and very little watering. It's six feet by six feet and full of flowers. My Monsieur Tiller is seven feet tall and grows near a pond. It is always full of flowers at least nine months of the year. You'll be fine. Just don't kill them with too much care. These guys hate being babied.

The ones I killed were all still in pots. I will feel better once they are established in the ground!

If they have sprouted adequate foliage it should be okay to transplant. Just make sure to, as Janetr suggested, take lots of dirt with them. once transplanted be very carefull with your watering techniques. I use a product called No Shock on all my transplants that has been very successfull in helping survival. Your specialty gardening store should carry a similar amendement. It's possible that an excess amount of fertilizer/wrong type of fertilizer did damage the root system. In any case, mid-July is too late for fertilizing. A late flush of soft growth will not have enough time to harden off before winter. Fertilizing in the first year after planting - or any other time - without a soil test indicating a need for it is never a good idea. The weather conditions you describe are ideal for phytophthora infections, but those that effect the roots would be nearly impossible to diagnose from looking at a leaf. Poor drainage is probably the number one cause of root rot problems, so anything that can be done to improve it would be worthwhile. Do cut back to healthy green tissue and be patient. The presence of buds is a good sign and it's highly likely that the rhododendrons will recover.

Pruning too hard is very unlikely to have killed them, although that may be possible if done at the wrong time (like too close to a hard freeze). But as you have discovered, it WILL affect blooming and rather substantially on most macrophyllas. At this time of year, I would not be overly concerned about leaf spot or other foliage problems. Just be sure to clean up any fallen leaves and make sure all the leaves come off the plant for winter and dispose of them properly. To avoid foliage problems next season, make sure the plants receive good air circulation and if possible, avoid any overhead watering. Mulching well around the plant will also help to avoid any lingering fungal spores from splashing up and reinfecting the foliage. It will also keep weeds down and conserve soil moisture and if you use a compost mulch, eliminate the need for any additional fertilizer. And leave any pruning for spring as they bud out and then only remove any obviously dead wood. I do not advocate much pruning other than this at any time unless you are rejuvenating old, mature and overgrown plants. If they are too big for the location, it is better to relocate them than to prune them to maintain size. And monitor the foliage beginning early in the season and take proactive measures to keep leaf spot or other foliar problems to a minimum.

For the most part, I've had better success with planting bands directly into the ground. However, I do leave the roses in their band pots for a week or so and after a few days in dappled shade put them in the sun with cardboard in front of the pots so that the soil won't overheat. I think everyone has somewhat different methods and you just have to find what works for you. Your bands sound wonderful and I hope you have great success with them.

I have a couple bands coming because I just couldn't stand to wait till next year to get some of them... I hope they'll be ok! I'm not sure whether to pot them up or put them in the ground. I think I may do a little of both. A couple of the climbers and mystery roses I feel like are on trial... so potting them would be best to see how I like them.

I almost killed my 3 potted roses last year, kind of forgot to water it for 2 days. Poor things lost most of their leaves and were really not looking happy. x) I stuck them into the soil last autumn and this spring quite surprisingly they are growing very nicely, as if all that water incident never happened.
