Southern Magnolia Bracken's Brown Beauty questions
Comments (37)Nice to hear, I have another one now I just recently bought in Va when I went on vacation there. The only other S.Mag I've seen in my area is a rich peoples area, it's where the Drs, Lawyers and Indian chiefs live, someone there has 2 fairly large S.Mags there, and when I went to the compost/leaf dump center, someone had dumped some cuttings from S.mag trees. They are very rare here, but, I would imagine that those in the rich neighborhood may have seen them and possibly a few people have planted them, unless those prunings were from those 2 trees I saw. They may have planted them small, because they weren't conicle like many nursery grown large transplants are shaped USUALLY. For all I know maybe a nursery near us is planting them, but, one of the largest around doesn't have them, I already nosed around there. Anyway, rmencel, it's great to have something so Tropicalesque, in our zones that needs no protection....See MoreMagnolia Bracken's Brown Beauty
Comments (22)What is your gardening zone?! How cold do you get and for how long? I don't have Braken's Brown but they are known for cold hardiness. Below is a Victoria in my NJ yard, I have a forest of evergreen Magnolias, different cultivars. Buy it if you like, but they need SPACE. Surprised that they are being sold in your area so early in the year, here they may pop up in April through June. P.S., Regarding cleanup, their older leaves fall off in May and June, while they are growing vigorously. There is little leaf debris in the Fall but cones are all over the lawn in November-January, and here, they have recently started to self-sow..., so, I get more trees to either prune out or give to friends....See MoreSouthern Magnolia varieties
Comments (18)Beng, I LOVE the 'Victoria' cultivar of M. grandiflora. Mine were bought from a local NJ nursery (now out of business thanks to the big box stores). 'Victoria' is one of several favorite cultivars for me. I find it very dense, very low branching (down to the ground), attractive (love the reddish foliage buds (reminiscent of Ficus elastica). It's also been cold hardy in NJ (Zone 7-ish), and most importantly good with heavy WET snow and suffered no damage after Superstorm Sandy's hurricane-force winds (probably a good trait for a Long Island S. Magnolia enthusiast). Flowering could be stronger. I would though rate it as moderate in growth, not slow for me here. I will post pics this weekend. P.S., Never heard of 'Coco'....See MorePruning Leggy Southern Magnolia
Comments (13)A southern magnolia in zone 6a is never going to look like a southern magnolia in Alabama. They grow leggy here. Do not prune. It won't encourage a more compact tree. Fewer leaves will diminish its ability to generate fuel for growth. Give it TLC and hope for a look you can live with after two more years. from plants.usda.gov: Southern magnolia primarily grows in the southeastern US and the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain in USDA Hardiness Zone 6–10 (Dirr, 1998). Southern magnolia is native from Maryland south to Florida and west to Texas. Cold-hardy cultivars can be grown as far north as southern Ohio, northern New Jersey, and Long Island. Missouri Botanical Garden, a very reliable source for all things plant, has it listed as zone 7-9 here: http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=c117. I think that's more honest. I choose plants and trees that list zone 5 even though I'm supposedly living in 6a....See Morerhizo_1 (North AL) zone 7
