Help replace a rose

I really need some help with this. I am removing Tipsy Imperial Concubine because I haven't seen a fully open bloom in 3 years. Enough already!

The spot is in front of the border near Evelyn, Mary Rose and Abe Darby. New Dawn is at the back of the border, with Larry Daniels in front of it. A Niobe clematis is climbing through New Dawn.

I was considering Lady Emma Hamilton, but the reviews from my last post seem to be a little mixed especially in terms of heat tolerance and disease resistance. I would love to hear more about this rose...

Fragrance is also a big plus. Yes, I want it all.

Any thoughts or additional suggestions? I would sure appreciate it.

What about 'Comte de Chambord' or 'Rose de Rescht'? Both have been quite clean here no-spray, and hold up to what heat we get pretty well. RdR doesn't have much fragrance to my nose (it does to some) but the Comte has a really first class perfume. They both have bushy growth habits and good rebloom, once established.

I don't agree with all of the choices. Clematis, yes, but honey suckle and morning glory are invasive and considered weeds here. And the only thing I know of that's heavier, stronger and more able to take down a structure than a full grown climbing rose is a full grown wisteria!

Ingrid, I don't know about a drip system - the garden is on several levels. However, it may be not too difficult - I shall at least look into it. When I water with a hose now, I put it on for 2 or 3 hours in the early morning, to give a good deep soak. But, until recently, I hand watered, mainly because it would have been so wasteful to do otherwise, as there was so much space between plants. That walflower (erysimum) is one plant, and I don't think it has even suckered, as I've had a good rootle around hoping to find one to plant elsewhere. It does seed a little - I've found around 4 seedlings. I got it as a cutting from a friend, so you can see it's very easy to propagate, without being invasive. It's taken about 3 years to reach a size of roughly 5' by 5'. Another plant I love with roses is heliotrope 'Cherry Pie". It's a pretty, pale mauve. I have it growing between 2 D de B's, and to my eye the colour combination is lovely. I've also just planted a couple of cistus, a prostrate one, and 'Snow White'. They have very low water requirement once established. So happy for you that the drip system is giving you such good results. I look forward to lots more photos.

I assume that this is to help protect the new softer growth against "critters". The witches broom can be also caused by herbicide damage. "Symptoms of RRD may resemble injury from herbicides. If herbicides make contact with rose foliage in late summer or fall, the plants may show damage immediately or the chemical may be stored in the buds. In the latter case, damage becomes evident when buds swell and leaves emerge the following spring. Some herbicides can cause a witches’ broom symptom on roses, as well as yellowing or stunted, narrow leaves (Figure 10). However, excessive thorniness and unusual red pigmentation do not usually occur with herbicide injury. Most herbicides are non-selective, so other plants in the area may also show unusual symptoms of distortion and discoloration." I've only had 'Poseidon', own root, for one year but it came through last year's arctic blast winter just fine. I don't think I had to prune anything on this rose; maybe a few tips that got a cold blast before they were hardened off. It's 3x3 or so right now, bushy, disease resistant (so far), and did its best to give me several blooms. Japanese beetles got many of those, and some did fry in our summer here. I'm pretty hopeful it will grow out of the frying with age based on what others in even warmer zones have reported. Some have reported he tends to get BIG, but most of those seem to be dealing with multiflora-grafted roses. I want to say I got mine from Roses Unlimited, but I'm not certain. Might I suggest another Kordes rose to add to your potential replacements? Ruby Ice is a blooming machine - pumped out dozens of these little red and white reverse blooms from spring until frost! Also in it's first year for me, but just as hardy and disease resistant as 'Poseidon' so far. I don't think it had ratty leaves even at the end of the season. No scent, and the blooms are small, but there's a lot of them and they hold well as cut flowers. It's also quite thornless! I got mine from Chamblee's.

HoovB - I looked up both Rose de Rescht and Comte on HMF and they are both VERY tempting. Thank you so much for your responses to my last several posts. I think my challenge will be to find them. RdR is sold out at Berkeley Hort and they don't carry Comte. If any No CA gardeners know of a source - please chime in!

Molineux is another I hadn't thought of. It looks like a good prospect in terms of size fragrance and disease resistance.

Betty, I have grown Rose de Rescht no-spray in Ventura County for close to 20 years.
It's been a good bloomer, and to me, it is richly-fragrant.

(I once did a talk on roses to a Braille class, and RdR was the favorite across the board.)

Thank you for the additional feedback on Rose de Rescht! It's interesting how scent is such a different experience from person to person. I'm encouraged that you found it to be so fragrant. I'm also glad to hear it has done will in your no-spray garden. I don't spray either.
