The Horrible Flood!

The storm this past weekend has been so difficult to overcome. All of my plants were under water! I had to dig my Echinaceas and move them before they were ruined. They are still wilting, but I think most of them should pull through. It's an awful feeling seeing your garden under water. So much money and time goes into creating our gardens and it's almost like part of you is missing.

I'm glad all of my family are ok and hope yours are too.

Oh, wow - didn't realize it was that bad. So sorry to hear this, I hope all will be okay for you guys down there....

Hi Everyone - I'm just getting online today. I'm in Apalachin and we've been without power and limited water from Tue until yesterday. I'm not complaining since SOoooo many people have such disasters to deal with. But we were happy to get showered and have power again today. Rte 434 was flooded east and west of us so we had to sit tight until Friday. Then we were able to get through to Vestal for ice. Unfortunetly we had to throw away alot of food that was in the fridge and extra freezer. We tried to use up what we could by feeding neighbors. I'm a pack rat so we had a lot to share with those who didn't have much food or gas grills for cooking. It was actually kind of fun having everyone here. My poor neighbors down the hill from us got a horrible flood. The drain pipe get clogged with debri so the creek over flowed into there yard. There was 10 feet of water swirling around in a whirl pool in their backyard Tuesday night. There basement got flooded up to the first floor (not including the first floor). They didn't loose much but it was a mess. You can see the pictures in the link below. My side gardens got flooded. But they are recovering. I had just put in a new garden with nice compost and garden soil. It all swept away. But it can all be replaced at some point. I've been so behind anyway on getting my winter sown plants and plants from the swap planted so luckily I still have lots of plants. I've also been behind on my container planting. I just finished those yesterday. Usually I'm done by Memorial Day. I hope I get some decent blooms before summer is over. My winter sown petunias are just starting to bud and bloom. So they should look good all summer (I hope). You can see my garden starting to flood in some pictures and me and my kids sleeping together one night when they are afraid of the total darkness. You can also take a look my spring garden photos too. I hope to get more pictures out there soon. My heart goes out to those that have lost so much. We have friends with 2 young children in Vestal (in Castle Gardens) that have lost a great deal and they are not sure if/when they can get in to salvage what little they have left. There are two strategies you can take. You can buy a cheaper machine and spend the $$$ to repair it if needed. You can buy an extended warranty but they're gambles and have drawbacks. Or you can call your local repairman who you have a good relationship with and who you can afford. People who repair their own appliances or work with a good local repairman they like tend to be the most satisfied with their appliances. Or you can buy a Speed Queen. Major appliance purchase prices are similar to 40 years ago, but manufacturing costs and overhead have increased dramatically. And that's not even accounting for inflation! That 40 year old Maytag that still works and cost $500 when new would cost thousands today. But just think, for $800 or less you can get a Speed Queen TLs. And for the same dollar amount as that Maytag you can get a machine today as well - but don't expect it to be nearly as good! Part of what has decreased quality so much is this mentality of trying to get something for nothing. This applies to both goods and services. Quality machines cost more for a reason! Less parts are outsourced, and American workers demand higher wages than workers in more "competitive" countries. Higher quality components use more expensive materials. Today's $300-500 top loaders or $800-1000 front loaders just don't compare to their Speed Queen counterparts. That's not to say ALL non SQ machines will be in the landfill in less than 5 years. But chances are they will need repair more often, and in the case of front loaders they will be more difficult to repair than SQ, meaning higher labor charges from your serviceperson.

Minflick, my condolences. I can believe it's very hard, but it sounds like you're pulling through. Good luck! I have unconventional ideas about Bermuda grass. Here's how it works with me. We have patches of it here and there in the garden, which I admit is a fairly wild-looking place. Like debbym we have summers that are too hot to garden in, at least for me, and so the Bermuda grass grows all summer long before I get around to attacking it when fall arrives. Well, we don't water in summer once a plant has been in the ground a year. Our heavy clay soil and high annual rainfall allow this, though we have dry summers. I also permit all kinds of annual grass and little wild herbaceous plants to grow in the beds: veronica, vetch, annual euphorbia, etc., and I mulch the beds lightly with old hay, pruning clippings, cut grass, and so on. Between the drought, the plant competition, and the mulch (which also lightens the top layer of soil so that the Bermuda grass can't root quite so firmly) the Bermuda grass can't get so far ahead in summer that I can't push it back again in fall. I can't eliminate it, but I can keep it under control, and mostly out of the beds. The downside of gardening this way is that the roses go into semidormancy in summer. That doesn't bother me, since we have a long growing season and when it's that hot I don't want to be out in the garden anyway. And summer offers other beauties. Shade also discourages Bermuda grass. My starting point in thinking about it was that in nature Bermuda grass doesn't grow EVERYWHERE, in some places it gets outcompeted. So it has to be possible to establish conditions in which it doesn't thrive.

You're welcome. I bought 4 Peggy Martin roses 3 -4 years ago after reading the story. I really hope the people down there all have flood insurance. The houses in the flood zone should be built for it. On Edsito island in SC, most of houses are built for flood, the entryway of each house is a long stairway right to the 2nd floor. The living space is on the 2nd floor and up. The houses are built on decks, an easy way to say it.

I really feel for you and the people of Nashville, seeing the Grand Ole Opry flooded was sad indeed. I hope things rebound for you more than you think.

I was shocked to see so little news coverage of this tragedy... 30 people dead, the worst flooding in 500 years and the headlines were all todo with some car bomb in NY that didn't actually go off.

I hope your plants survive.. so glad to hear your family is safe.

I feel your pain. Non-gardeners don't understand how attached we are to our gardens after years of effort and thought and money. Sorry you're going through this, glad you and your family are safe.

Echinacea, I'm so sorry. :( Where are you? I'm in Brentwood, between Nashville and Franklin. We were very blessed to have escaped any damage. In fact, our internet and cable were down last weekend, and we had no clue it was getting so bad. We were just thinking, "Wow, what a lot of rain this is." Our yard, very amazingly, did not even have a single puddle. We were so shocked to see the photos and video when we finally got cable back.

I'm on my third day of two-minute showers. Had to resort to wearing a ball cap today. I hope they can get the other water station working soon.

Listen, if you lose any of your echinaceas, I would be happy to donate some seedlings. I winter sowed a lot of echinacea this year (I'm a big fan as well). I have seedlings of Double Decker, Purpurea, Tennesseensis and Green Envy. Let me know!

Has the water gone back down now? Is there any chance that some of your plants will survive?

I watched a news video this week showing a row of homes with all their water damaged belongings, from furniture to photos, sitting out by the road ready to be hauled off. It's heartbreaking, not just for the loss, but the overwhelming amount of work to restore everything back to normal. I'm sure there must be a lot of people who don't have insurance to cover flooding. So sad.

I have regular spring flooding at my place. In fact today our creek is flooding and the waters are rising.

A huge area near the creek is often under water for up to 4 days...and apart from a few items that float away, everything usually survives. It leaves a terrible mess to clean up and looks hopeless for quite some time though. Very discouraging and my sympathies are with you.

This week's concern is actually frost each night. :(

People not having flood insurance has been a huge issue. Most of the people whose homes were flooded (I've heard of some had five feet of water *inside* the house) did not live in a "flood plain," and therefore were unable to purchase flood insurance. Not that most of them thought they'd ever need it.

I believe the waters have receded now for most, but the cleanup efforts will go on for quite some time. You're right, it is just heartbreaking to see peoples' possessions lined up on the street for pickup. :(

I heard from a friend whose home was flooded that FEMA was going to pick up 100% of the tab, which I was happy to hear. Still, money can't replace cherished belongings or, worse, loved ones who were lost.
