Double Knock Out rose

Last fall I removed a couple of un-vigorous old tea roses and replaced them with Double Knock Out roses. Of course they don't have that fine hybrid tea form, but it's nice to have regular color in the rose border. Double Knock Out seems much more resistant to blackspot, and has come through winter with only a little tip die back. The only winter protection I used was to mound up a few inches of used potting soil at the base. ..........Dave

Dave, I put in a total of five knock outs in February. They are doing well, with a lot of growth and bloom. I am a very big fan of hybrid teas, so not sure if I would add more knockouts; but it is so nice to have beautiful color all summer.

I am also a big fan of the regular Knockouts and the double ones. I still have the hybrid teas and 5 climbers that I'm not getting rid of anytime soon.

I'm planning to use the Knockouts for mass planting at my church.

Not very well. If you cut it just as it is opening and don't expect it too last long, you might get a couple of days out of it.

I'm a pretty lazy gardener, truth be told. Half my roses have damage that looks like that, covering a third to a half of the bush/plant. Nobody angsts over it but me... Hubs could care less. Visitors look at the flowers and the redwoods and say "ooooh, pretty!" and never notice the foliage damage. As many times as I have looked (a lot), I have yet to find more than 2 culprits, so I gave up. As long as my bushes are still growing, I can live with some unsightly leaves. I don't like it, but I can tolerate it.

Can I prune my double knock out roses now?

I haven't had roses long either, but I think it is fairly easy to see where to prune in the spring. Wait to do it after your last frost which should be around March or April. It is a signal for your rose to start growing again so wait until you are sure it is safe. Now, when you look at your rose this spring you will see brown ends on the canes. That is dead wood, and you will cut all of that out. Make your first cut just below the brown wood into the green part of the cane. If you don't see any green cane then prune down to the soil. If the green cane is all white inside like an apple, it is good wood. If the inside is brown then you need to prune further down. Watch for dark areas on the green canes. That is canker and you need to prune below any canker you see. Once you have finished pruning seal all the cuts with something. I use regular white glue, but you can use carpenter's glue or nail polish. That will keep out borers which would otherwise lay their eggs inside the cut end of the cane. Feel free to stop by the rose forum for more advice. I post there quite often and everyone is very helpful.

Yeah, they do the same thing here. But not so good of a deal. Last year one of the lowes across town did the same thing w/ tropicals. We "rescued 15 different plants. I am still nursing a majesty palm back to health and so far I am doing quite well. I am always out for a good deal at lowes sometimes they have good deals and at other times they are not so good.

believe it or not, KO and DKO are very rare here, very seldom to find in nurseries and to see in gardens. I heard many positive things abouth them, thus decided to give them a try. I have planted 20 DKO (16 red + 4 pink).

For now, they are doing well: no disease, fast growth, they are still very small but always in bloom.

The color of DKO is very bright, and IMO very difficult to combine with other colors. I do not dislike it, but would not mass-plant them (too showy and clear-cut, I prefer more shades of color).
Unfortunately DKOs do not make hips. I am used to rugosas so that's a minus.
