Question about a rose in a tree, not a tree rose
Comments (3)Here's what I found Apples are Kingdom: Plantae Division: Magnoliophyta Class: Magnoliopsida Order: Rosales Family: Rosaceae Subfamily: Maloideae Genus: Malus Species: Malus domestica - domestic apple. Roses are Same except Subfamily = Rosoideae Genus = Rosa Species = Rosa speciosa. Plants of the same botanical genus and species can usually be grafted even if different varieties. Plants of the same genus but different species often can be grafted but the result may be weak or short-lived, or they may not unite at all. Plants of different genera are less successfully grafted, although there are some cases where this is possible. For example, quince, genus Cydonia, may be used as a dwarfing rootstock for pear, genus Pyrus. So I guess I answered my own question. Seemed like a good idea though. I'd like to have a rose hanging from the top of an apple tree....See MoreCatnip questions and tips
Comments (22)1.) no it isn't hard at all, along w/ my basil it was the only herb to really wow me. 2.) i dumped an entire packet of burpee catnip in a 6-8" pot i ended up w/ a mini splotch of living shag carpet in there, it stunted the growth so that after 4 months the plants were 3-4 inches tall, in short a packet will give you OODLES of plants a little goes a long way. 3.) diffrent cats will eat more or less of the plant, we have a kitten that will mow it down, and i have a 7yr old who only eats perfect leaves. 4.) use the leaves, i make mine w/ a bit of fresh nip leaves and a few leaves of sweet basil. it's a mild tasting tea, no hint of bitterness as w/ some herbs, though the smell is intimidating. very nice for a sore throat, i first made some in desperation as i had spent the day coughing and miserable, it worked instantly, it did a better job of soothing my throat than an analgesic spray, and it's calming effects are stronger then chamomile imo. 5.) catnip is a perenial in zones 3-9 and should be planted in a container like other mints, or as so i've read 6.) the seeds should be good for later plantings. the rule of thumb is 3yrs before seed quality goes south...See MoreCatnip- Questions on Propagation and Seeds Collecting
Comments (7)Let your flowers mature, turn brown, and dry. Then you can cut the stalks and shake seeds into a bag. The seeds are very small and take a while to germinate in the spring, but once you plant one plant, you wind up with a pretty good patch of it. It reseeds pretty well if you want to keep it in the same area(or pot). I have put large rocks around the smaller plants to keep neighborhood(and my own)cats from rubbing it into the ground. Once the plants get above the rocks, the cats can roll in it all they want and it will survive. If your cuttings won't root in water, you may try sticking new cuttings in a small pot of moist medium and keeping it in the shade for a while until you see new growth. You could also try it with and without rooting hormone and see which works best. I have never rooted catnip cuttings. I'm sure you will get responses from those that have....See MoreCatnip toy question
Comments (3)I think the potency would be okay. I have this plastic container of catnip that must be about 10 years old by now. My cats still open the cabinet door and dig that thing out and play with it. One of them recently dragged it around for three minutes trying to get it open - captured on video. Here is a link that might be useful: Proof that catnip lasts...See Moresubk3
