Craftsman model 917.273764 drive stopped

while spreading fertilizer today my 2004 tractor just stopped moving . I thought I broke the belt but it was just very loose . what is used to tension the belt ? I couldnt find a spring tension wheel . its hard to see with the mower deck attached . tomorrow I will drop the deck to get a better look , help please

Maybe the belt rolled of the idler pulley.

I can see the engine pulley and the transaxle pulley and the belt is in place

I fianlly solved the drive wheel problem(s). The tiny spring holding the pawl must be inserted below the pawl - that is to say, it should push the pawl towards the pinion drive gear. In my case, it appears as though one of the springs had slipped to the outside of the pawl, thereby hindering its ability to enage the drive gears. As an aside, the pawl and spring are less than $4 each from Sears and the whole pinion/pawl assembly (#414860) is only about $25.

The Model number is 944-525800, which I believe is made by Husqvarna. I have tightened the spring tension the to point where the belt will just freewheel when the engagement lever is released. Should I install a stronger spring? There is a possibility that the belt continues to slip even when the lever is fully squeezed due to insufficent tension on the idler pulley. Is this a common problem with this model?

other than a alignment problem, sounds like to me when the grease gets alittle thick (includes the rollers in the tracks, they resist more when it cold also IMO)it don't have enough HP. What is the HP rating? Does it make different sounds when it stops? does it throw the circuit breaker or does it just stop??. It also maybe pulling too much amps and the overload system maybe shutting down. Do you have to push a reset buttom when it stops ro get it going again? sounds like you need to get out the multi-meter and check the amps see if it's within spec's for starters, If that's not it I would inspect the rollers see if you can find couple dragging pulling the HP down and the amps up. report back with the findings, there maybe electrical engineer lurking here??

Thanks for all of the help Don - job successful! One thing I noticed before it was too late - I installed the gear sprocket assembly rotated compared to the previous installation. This caused the slot on the top of the sprocket support to be rotated - causing me not being able to install the plastic sprocket cover. I imagine the purpose of the sprocket cover is to keep dust out of the sprocket and to keep the lube from drying out. I need to figure out an alternative as I am not motivated to take the whole thing apart again.

I just had the same thing happen to my Craftsman GT 5000 and the transaxle pulley seamed a little loose. Upon further inspection I noticed the pulley was just spinning on the input shaft; both the shaft and the pulley were stripped round. In process of replacing them both.

Stripped pulley and or input shaft is a good suggestion.

could be shaft or pulley . I finally have some time today to dig a little deeper . the transmission disengage lever doesnt seem to be hooked in to anything . I have never worked on it b4 so Im not sure how it works . it is attached by a spring to a bracket only . should something else be attached to the lever for it to work ?

the disengage lever isnt attached and I cant see anything broken or looking like it should have been connected to the lever . what does it attach to. can anyone post a pic please

the lever is attached to a bracket , or so I thoughtit was a stationary bracket a little WD40 and a couple gentle taps got the lever to pivot properly
