Ariens @ HD -) $999

I know its not a $3K JD. I know many here snub anything less than $2k but I am an average homeowner who does not have that kind of money. I have a little over a half acre of fairly flat terrain. I know many will say buy something used and I figure that can work well for someone who can do maintenance...about all I am good for is changing oil, plugs filters and blades though. I have an 11 year old TORO 32XL...its a small but apparently qualty built WheelHorse. Still I have learned that things wear out and I can not always fix them and repairs can be pricey. the toro has served me well and may well go on serving me well. However, in the last 2 years its had some problems that were beyond my abilities to fix,, namely needing new belts and pulleys and now perhaps a brake problem. To this point I figured it was worth the $$$$ to keep the thing going and I may well invest a bit more...the dude at the toro delaer actually told me mine was one of the last quality toros built...the new ones are essentially Red Craftsmans...in fact he suggested I get a Craftsman and save $$$$ over the toro...he was pi$$ed with what toro did with there line.

I have no axe to gring with Craftsman...in fact I thought there part of a breed that covers eseentially all brands!

Anyway, if I need to get something new I am thinking a gear drive is less prone to problems than a Hydro...no? The Ariens gear drive goes on sale for $999 at HD.....I think its a 42" deck and 17.5HP. (my toro is a puppy at only 32" and 12HP) In this league, how does the Areins compare to the Cub Cadet and gear drive JD also sold at HD?

Does anyone even make a 32" tractor anymore?

The new Toro riders come out of the MTD factory. MTD products are Cub, White, Troy, Yardman, Yard Machines... As an entry level rider- the machines built by Electrolux do well. These would include Some Sears, Husqvarna, Poulan, and the Areins at least that I saw in HD last year. They are easier to work on that your XL too. Did you get not the brakes fixed?

The temp dropped about 25 degrees or I'd be out there trying the brake adjustment...hopefully this weekend. I saw a Poulan for $699 at HD. The nice thing was it was smaller...38". I have to admit it looked cheesey. The deck looked real thin. I saw a lot of exosed wires on the front sides...unless a cowl or something was missing. I looked harder at the Ariens gear drive and Hydro...they look to be completely different units...maybe even different manufaturers. The deck area, engine area etc etc looked different. If I can not get the Toro safely going I may have some more questions on these models. I am gussing the Husky's at Lowes are likely the same thing.

Yep, it's a Chinese engine. Made by LCT (Liquid Combustion Technologies). If you saw the specs on that engine and not the name you would probably love it. It has a full ball bearing supported crank, a 1000 hour epa rating, etc.. All in all it's not a bad engine (other than being Chinese) and that's what makes the price lower. It's not a clone of any other engine, it's LCT's own design. Cub Cadet and others also have these engines on some of their equipment.

Snapper or Ariens Snowthrower???

Ahhh - so we bought the Snapper snow thrower two storms ago (about 2 weeks ago). During the cleanup of the first storm, the chute favored the right and refused to readjust to the left. We called the local dealer and they sent someone out to fix it. When he couldn't fix it he loaded it onto a trailer and took it back to their store for more fixin'. They dropped it off later that week. Yesterday was our second storm and, yes, you guessed it, the same thing has happened. Now I will contact the dealer again tomorrow but this time we're returning the Snapper. I haven't ever tried to return such an expensive item before, does anyone have an opinion on our success? I figure we may have to upgrade but I am concerned about what stock the dealer may have left. Any advice would be welcome.

We have an Ariens 624 that has worked well for 4 winters. It has one of the last Tecumseh engines made. My only problem with it is that it won't start with the fuel valve closed. I think that Ariens is in business for the long haul, and therefore they will support their products. We paid around 800 dollars for our snowblower, new, so the price you quote for a similar machine implies that snowblowers have become less expensive.

Ariens is HOP, so a better choice then MTD offerings.

I don't know if the coupon code still works, but I got the 1400 model for about 1250 after tax, plus 160 in bing cashback. (also bought an ariens tiller with a subaru engine)

My mother's poulan is going strong for the third year now, and she doesn't do any blade sharpening ever on it, or anything besides change the oil, and they have 2 acres to mow. I believe they are more durable then some make them out to be, but certainly not made the way they were in the past.

Gear and hydro are equally good. You can find good ones and cheap ones. I was impressed by a Sears craftsman hydro tractor made by Husqvarna - it was $1400. Sorry, I forget the exact model. It was a step or two up from their least expensive rider. Very nice for the price, but I'm volunteering your money. $400 makes a difference.

No problems with an inexpensive tractor. I have a $999 (including cart) MTD cheapie from Wal-Mart that has done well for 10 years on my 1.5 acres. Change the oil, sharpen the blades, and replace any wires chewed by mice over the winter (sigh).

I'm not so sure that gear and hydro are the same as far as reliability and durability. If the gears are halfway decent, they should be more durable in hilly terrain or pulling loaded carts, etc.

The TuffTorq K46 is the ubiquitous hydro found on pretty much every tractor under $3k. I know there are others, but the K46 seems to be the standard and the most durable of the lot. With that being said, its durability is questionable when consistently working steep hills or heavy attachments. You need to bump up to the Garden Tractors to get more durable hydros. Mfrs. will not put an expensive durable hydro in a low-priced tractor as they will not meet the price point they need to keep volume sales - as long as cheap hydros are available, that is what you'll get on a cheap tractor, regardless of durability. The hydros are the weak link in pretty much all lawn tractors.

I thought about that as I've read people having problems with their hydros after a while who have hilly lawns, but my yard is pretty much completely flat, so I thought the risk would be more mitigated.
