So many teas, so little time

I need some help with placing these roses. All were ordered this winter/spring, most bands. They have been growing in gallon containers for a couple of months and most are ready to plant. I have been finding conflicting reports of how big they get. I know climate makes a difference, but the descriptions from one source sounds like a total difference rose when described by another source.

Lately, I just end up dragging the pots from one spot to another, really need to get them planted. Would hate to have a smaller one trying to grow in the shadow of a giant.

Please help and rate where you would place each one of the in terms of:

front of the border (FB)

mid-border (MB)

back-of-the-border (BB)

I doubt that the top one is crabgrass. First of all, crabgrass has stiffer, shorter leaves. And since you live in Zone 5, it is pretty unlikely that you have crabgrass yet. It is a grassy weed though. The second one is 100% certain that its wild violets. The third one is dandelions. Bad news: they all require different weed killers. Where do you live? Zone 5 isn't specific enough for weed identification and weed killer recommendations.

I'd say . . . Corkbark Fir - Abies lasiocarpa var. arizonica. Worth a try but won't like summer heat too much. Delavay Fir - Abies delavayi. No hope (zone 8 hardy, needs cool, extremely wet summers). Ernest Fir - Abies recurvata var. ernestii. Very good prospects. Faber Fir - Abies fabri. No hope (zone 7 hardy, needs cool summers). Georges Fir - Abies georgii. No hope (zone 7 hardy, needs cool summers). Greek Fir - Abies cephalonica. Very good prospects. Japanese Fir - Abies firma. Worth a try but may suffer winter cold damage. Amur Fir - Abies nephrolepis. Well worth a try but won't like summer heat too much. Korean Fir - Abies koreana. Well worth a try but won't like summer heat too much. Min Fir - Abies recurvata. THANK YOU to all my forum friends for your nice comments. Marg...yes that is a japanese maple, one of the laceleafs. I have two in that bed. I actually made the bed first, then planted the maples. I have other japanese maples around the property (another of my plant addictions, of which I have many). I actually make raised beds because the ground is so full of rocks and roots and it's impossible to plant. My whole property was forest when I moved here. Rita... I have unearthed probably thousands of rocks over the past few years. New Hampshire is named the 'Granite State' for a reason....LOL. I am running out of rocks so now I am getting them from my father's property miles away but I don't have a truck so I gather a few everytime I visit my dad. My husband isn't too crazy about the car always being dirty from the dug-up rocks...Haha. Edward & Ellie...Sorry, I don't know the name of any of my peonies. I have never bought any since over the years people have shared them with me, the same with the iris and many of my perennials. I have a lot of pass-along plants started from divisions. Folks don't usually give me a name so maybe they don't know either? I did see one at Lowe's the other day that looked just like my white one, but I didn't check to see the name. Sorry I'm no help. Missylin...I am pretty sure that peonies are colder-zone plants but I don't know how warm a climate they can tolerate. It seems everyone around here grows peonies and they do very well so they must like the cold. The same is true for tulips, lilacs, rhododendrons, spruce trees, birch trees, etc. which flourish here. (There has to be some positives to living where its really cold, right?). We do have glorious summers but it is so short-lived. Julia...yes we are 'rock-miners'...teehee. That is a very good word for it! I am told that I have not only a plant addiction, but a rock addiction. I can't stop making rock beds and taking over the lawn and entire property with rock garden beds. I figure, the rocks are there and they are free. And digging them up keeps me in shape! Dave, I've stood outside the walls of that garden so many times and because it was by appointment only (now open for self tours during the weekdays). I have never gotten in until yesterday! I'm sure you probably understand the vocabulary of Japanese gardens better than I and you would enjoy it very much. Also, Lake Balboa Park's cherry tree bloom display is past it's peak - I drove through on my way to Tillman to see it again; next year I'll bring a picnic to spread under the trees (including some plum wine, heh heh). I know what you mean about the Huntington's price. Last year it was ~$12 to get in and $60 for a membership, this year $15 and $100 for a membership! We used to go there when we were kids for free.... At this rate I wonder how many patrons they'll have when it's $25 to get in? Unfortunately, the Japanese garden there is really fine - it is my favorite one, maybe because it is older, and situated in a gulch. Also like I said, a great diversity of species and the display house is one you want to move into! When my mother took my brothers and me there, I remember the arching bridge was bright red and there was a huge bronze bell that we would ring with the very large bamboo striker (I think it's still there, just no longer accessable/ringable). If you can spring for the entrance fee I promise you that you will be enchanted. I like many things about Descanso but their Japanese garden is not one of their strong points (unless you are a Camellia maniac - even then, IMO there are a greater number of types of Camellia at the Huntington including my favorite, the fragrant species C.lutchensis). I'm sure the gardens you choose to visit will be delightful. Do report back on your experiences won't you?

Give Le Vesuve some elbow room, too. Mine is only 3' tall but 6' wide - so far.

I agree about Mrs Dudley Cross. If I remember Marie d'Orleans is about the same.

Teas are pretty much back of the border - at least the ones you have listed. Check out Vintage's sizing charts. A #2 - midsize is going to be 5'-6', and #3 (which you have a lot of) are beyond that. And don't forget you're also dealing with that much width or more.

Isabella Sprunt - Wider than tall after 5 years in the garden. Maybe 5' by 6 or 7.
Safrano - 7' or 8' tall by 8' wide after 5 years in the garden.
Mme. Lombard - Only 3 years old, and already been squashed to the ground by a falling tree- but STILL the biggest rose in my garden. Give this one 10' by 10' but make it to where it isn't so far in the back of the border that you can't smell blooms.
Mme. Berkeley - Wider than tall after 3 years. Probably 4' tall so far by 6' wide.
Angels' Camp - Newest one that I feel I can comment at all about. This one has grown large quickly, but suffered winter die back which is odd for me in my zone ... at least with teas. The hts like to kill themselves over winter, but never my teas.

Every single rose on this list is one of my favorites.

William R. Smith is a beast and a fast grower. But the bloom is exquisite, it never photographs as beautiful as it actually is and the petals have a lot of substance....so it lasts well on the bush or in a vase.It is absolutely my favorite rose in my favorite class. I agree that you have made wonderful selections, but I hope you have a large yard!

I love the roses on your list. I only have the following of them:

General Tartas

In my Orange County CA climate (significantly warmer than yours) every one of these roses is very large. The only reason my General Tartas and Safrano are both on the small side is that they're very young still. Each one of these plants is capable of building easily over 6 x 6 in this climate, and probably larger without shaping. Mme. Berkeley grows wider than tall. All of these are very beautiful roses.
