Yes this is a good time to move them. Mine are up about an inch, and I'm planning to move a big one into the back yard in the next couple days. Today was warm and sunny, the next few days are supposed to get cloudy and a little rainy which is better weather for transplanting.

Mine is just peeking through. I dug several pieces and potted them up for a plant sale and they also are starting to show. Mary

Thanks, I'm sure glad to hear I can move them. Their 2 years old this year. I wanted to move them this weekend but it's going to be in the high 90's! We've gone from winter to summer, no spring to speak of. Next week it's supposed to cool off so I'll do it then.

My Joe gets huge and is already about 3 ft high. Got so tall last year that I had to tie it to a stance. I would love to move it about a foot and a half over. Can I do it now or am I too late?

If it were mine I would move it in the fall. Mine had fairly stout root systems, and I think it would be easier without all the stems and foliage. It will spread slowly if it is the same common wild type Joe Poe weed as mine was, so alternatively you can just cut chunks off the side where you don’t want it and wait for it to grow on the side where you do want it.

is the height of you Joe Pye an issue? It responds very well to summer pruning. You can cut it down by 25-50% in late May/early June depending on your zone (mine is also by a fence, so I cut the front by half, and I leave the back stems longer). I will bloom a couple of weeks later and the blooms may be a touch smaller, but there will be more blooms and the plant will be more sturdy. I was tired of my Gateway collapsing in heavy storms and this fixed the problem completely. I also used to tie it to the fence! Sorry if I misunderstood your post.
