H G T V Garden Programs

My feeling is that HGTV offers very little in the way of garden shows for the gardener who may not be a pro but who is advanced in knowledge and has been gardening for quite some time. Either their shows are too basic or are of very large gardens the average person does not own. What are your feelings?

My opinion is that they have taken the "G" out of the HGTV and replased it with a "D" for Home and Decorating TV. lol :)

As a professional designer who has been approached several times over the last few years to be in one of these programs, I can tell you they don't really make it an appealing proposition for the designer either. Rather than perhaps film an actual job with a real budget, they prefer to give you a project and have it be a rush job with very little money. Why would a talented designer want to do a half-assed job with little design or realistic budget, when it wouldn't be representative of their work? I told them I would consider it if they wanted to film an actual job I was already going to do, but this just isn't the way they prefer to work. As a result, I can't say I spend anytime actually watching HGTV, and prefer to get PR through being published in design magazines, or doing a charity garden tour.

A lot of the shows, whether interior or exterior, don't cater to small budgets. Some of the things they show cost more than what I paid for my whole house. I have always been a bargain shopper, a repurposer of old items, and if I do remodel in or out, I tend to save my money and buy the better items, instead of trying to save now and replace later anyway. I even built a trellis out of tree limbs from the tree we cut down where the pond went in. Is it fancy? Nope, but the morning glories don't care. I'd bet we could come up with better ideas AND get better viewership. But, I'm too busy playing in the pond. LOL.

I totally agree with you about the lack of good (or even crummy) gardening shows. To tell the truth, I haven't watched The Victory Garden with these new hosts (just once did it), but was fairly addicted to Crockett, Thompson, and Swain who passed on good horticultural practices adaptable to any part of the country. I require a show that doesn't dumb things down, gets their facts straight, introduces some new plants, and visits lots of gardens and gardeners. With the hobby gardening industry the single most active group in this country, I'd think that HGTV would jump back on the bandwagon. It's a multi-billion dollar industry, backed by an incredible corporate faction. Why don't they (HGTV) get that?

I really miss the old gardening programs by Martha Stewart,and Gary Allen "Landscape by Design". Wishful thinking on my part, a show about down to earth real gardeners, peeks into their gardens, featuring plants we all know and love, new discoveries, segments on real plants-people, their gardens and their specialties. I know, I know, in your dreams....

Yeah - I think it is pretty limited too. Very basic shows. It seems their emphasis is on real estate shows (which I really don't get - most people aren't moving every year) or lots of cheap decorating shows during the day.

My questions to HGTV re garden shows received a luke-warm form notice which offered no encouragement at all. I give up.

Give it up, dear people, they just arnt listening and they dont care. Most of us who have complained already have not seen any improvements on gardening on HGTV at all, why they even have the "G" in the station at all is beyond me.

I remember that they used to have a few good gardening shows on, most of the good ones seemed to be produced in Canada or the UK. The shows they have on now are LAME, not even worth watching. They could do so much with a few garden shows instead of the same boring real estate or tacky decorating shows that they seem to recycle.

Trying again!
The entire network is one big commercial. At first they are fun to watch then poof you notice your taste, wants have changed and feel ernest. Lucky for HGTV they can direct you where to BUY it all.

I do like Gardeners Diary everyday at 8:00am est - some of the gardens featured are rather large but they are for the most part just regular gardeners and not to overdone. I don't like the landscaping shows - I don't happen to have $20,000+ to dump into hardscaping and loads of mature large trees and shrubs that need placing with a crane. I get most of my inspiration from magazines and looking at pictures on the various forums on here....
