Gardening journal: what is useful

I need to keep better records. In my winter fantasies I imagine I will come in each day and type up a list on the computer of when plants have emerged, when they bloomed, and what I just planted. But by mid-May that is out the window. IÂve decide to just use a spiral notebook. I thought of using a ring binder but a regular notebook is more likely to fit in my tool bin and get taken outside.

How do you organize this? IÂm not imaging something pretty with little sketches or anything. Just functional. Sections for emergence, bloom time, etc. What I bought that year, what performed, what didnÂt. What I hope to achieve is better planning and coordination of colors and bloom time: other wise I buy at random and put where there is space and end up with everything blooming at once and clashing colors.

Thanks!
