4 Shelf Greenhouse

I am considering buying a 4 shelf greenhouse to use when rooting cuttings. (Currently I place a plastic bag over each pot until the cutting roots.) The shelf costs around $70.

Has anyone else used a similar product and will it work for this purpose?

It should work but how will you light it? The sun will cook the cuttings.

Are you planning on using this in or outdoors? I have used one of them indoors for rooting cuttings as it will hold in the humidity. I hung a flourescent light in it to increase the light level. Outdoors it will get very hot if it's in the sun and also get cold at night, depending on your zone. Inside they are great though.

FOLLOW UP: Hey all thank you so much for all the input! I planted 24 pans of seeds on Sunday afternoon and placed them inside one of my greenhouses but decided I would watch them closely and not put on lids making sure soil was good and moist also no lights on just yet. Door is zipped closed and min/max thermometer is reading 69 degrees. Tues morn I planted 5 more pans. Much to my shock and delight Weds morn I awoke to GERMINATION!!! Cosmos and Zinnias have sprouted as a matter of fact 7 pans had little seeds poking up:) I turned on the lights and they are set for 16 hrs. After 1 hr of lights being on I checked the thermometer and was shocked to see it had risen to 74 degrees.Yikes!! Open the door!! Now that the door is open it is maintaining 73 degrees (awesome) By last night there were 14 pans germinating!! This morning there are 21 pans now in germination. I am so excited to see these little gems. Now onto the next challenge of not over watering and adjusting the light as needed. Looks like I will be transplanting in a couple weeks if things keep going as well as they are. Again thank you all for your valuable input!! One very happy gardener here:)

LBoyce, I wouldn't fertilize them until spring, let's say March to get an early jump and half strength is what I would do them. You want them not to concentrate on root growth and fill the pot with roots so you can bump them up for spring and start the process of loving them to death! You got the book? Did you enjoy it?

Annette, Those misters are a way of life here in the south. You see them everywhere people congregate outside such as amusement parks and outdoor patios at restaurants and of course, on home patios. There are days when we would die without them. They are WONDERFUL for cooling and I'm sure would work well for a greenhouse! I either start seeds indoors on my kitchen windowsill, or direct sow. My 2 attempts at winter sowing were not worth the trouble since we can have temperature in the 60's and 70's during the winter months and often the sprouts would either fry or outgrow their containers. I have found that I have better luck just by direct sowing. Last winter my neighbor was remodeling and getting rid of 2 glass shower doors. They were clear glass and in perfect shape, so I took them to experiment with. I propped them up against the south facing side of our brick house. Our back and side yards are enclosed with a 6' wood stockade fence, it made a nice micro-climate. I put a few potted plants behind glass, including a petunia and 2 mini-roses that had been on my patio during the summer. All continued to grow and went into bloom very early behind my makeshift greenhouse. It worked so well, that I am going to do more this year. I like to re-purpose whenever I can, and this very simple idea worked like a charm! Plus since it was frameless and the glass was clear, it "disappeared". All you could see were petunias, roses etc. starting to bloom in early February. :-) Marilyn

Webkat5....Thanks so much for taking the time to post the pic. That is definitely the plant I got. I went to Exotic Angel's web site to see if I could figure out what kind I bought that didn't have a name tag. I took pics of it as well as the others that I just bought but can't find any instructions on how to post pics on this web site. Just out of curiosity...have you been collecting hoyas long? Sahara...Finally got your e-mail today! Must have been attached to a slow moving "snail mail"! I cannot tell you the huge difference in my plants by putting a bowl of steaming hot water in my GH for humidity. I left the plants in there all nite. Isn't it a little risky to do this on a daily basis to hoyas? My zebra plant now looks like something out of a magazine! I'm trying my alocasia polly tonite to see if the humidity will help that! I have 2 of them and they are wonderful in a house. I also hung florescent lights on mine but I went a step further and purchased a heat mat for this reason. I love my geraniums. I use a root hormone before "sticking" them in the soil, and I have purchased a heat mat with a thermostat on it for consistent heat. I have to take the cover off when it gets too hot (a small thermometer can be hung in view to monitor the temp of the room and the soil). These can be placed in a garage during the winter if you don't have the space in your house. Or..If you need to keep it outside, get an inexpensive shade cloth at walmart and place over the "greenhouse" and use grow lights on a timer. This keeps the temps cooler during the summer and take it off during the winter but keep the clear plastic on to keep plants warm. A $70 price tag though?? Hmm. Makes me wonder if building it would be cheaper from Lowes. They have this plastic panel with holes that only costs $13 and it is a 48 X 60 and great for making a table. The rest of the wood can come from a construction site for the legs, and such. Consider your options carefully. For me, money is very tight and I lost my job due to cutbacks and war spending.

Lowes carries a four shelf greenhouse for $35-$40...Wal Mart, too. I got mine on clearance for $18, so do shop around.

I got one of these from Lowes for $39.99. I've had it about three years and it's held up pretty good. In fact, it's what got all this HFGH (10x12) stuff started for me - so look out!!
