Just found this site. i put a HFGH 10x12 up this spring and luckily didn't loose it before i got it braced up. I was sure worried the second day when the panels went flying. so i grabbed some screws and got them attached good. Next the doors them selves buckled. I attached some scrap metal sign post to both edges of the doors and stiffened it up . Next i built rafters from 1/2 emt , yep across every wall stud with vertical braces in middle and on each side. I screwed the bottom door frame down with self tapping screws .

Guess i got lucky and figured out what it needed. Now have to solve the heat/cool problems.And put some benches in.

Hello busy1, glad you were able to make the modifications your greenhouse needed. Sounds like you've done a really good job. Without the good posts on this site, I don't think I would have tackled the HFGH 10x12. Mine has only been up a few months, and I'm currently working on the heating/cooling/benches set up too, before I move plants in.

What do you think caused the doors to buckle? That's one complaint I haven't read about in many posts.

What will you be growing in your GH? Is it for tropical plants, wintering over plants or veggies? A mix of all three?

The amount of heat depends on how well you insulate and seal it. If you try to heat it just like it comes then the above post would be about right but last month I kept mine at 65F when it was 12 below with wind chill of -50 and I did it with two 1500 watt heaters and a third one that was set on 750 watts. I set the one for 750 to run continuous and the other two were controlled by a thermostat. Most of the time the two heaters are plenty.

Kristofer there's 2 online nurseries that I buy from often and they each have a limited variety of passies. Their plants are big and healthy and their prices are very reasonable. I have bought passies from both though I usually buy other tropicals. There's Zone 9 Tropicals and Caldwell Nursery. Tom, I can help. It shouldn't be too much trouble to send a few seeds your way. I like to pay forward, because a lot of good folks helped me in the past. I presently have a Conley Ranger Series 2000, a Farmtek High Tunnel and an Atlas Greenhouse Systems single bay, Snow Arch Gutter Connect with 8' side walls. Of the 3 I like the Atlas Snow Arch the best. The high side walls allow better air circulation and an overall larger feel. You would have to check with them for snow load rating, mine is in Indiana and have had no snow load problems. They also offer the RT gutter connect which I believe is even stronger. I don't know what your requirements for hanging baskets are, but I'm planning to add a second bay this fall primarily for hanging baskets. Every time I've talked to the folks at Atlas I've had good service, and would fully recommend them. If you decide to go with Atlas, go with the metal frame end kits, they work real well and will make finishing the greenhouse so much easier.

I think the reason the doors buckled is that it was the weakest area at that time. I had some pretty strong gusting winds that day that were pushing straight on the doors.my wife got in it while i was looking for more screws and held them so they didnt blow plumb out ,or in ,as the case was. Luckily the winds subsided around evening and i was able to reinforce them in the dark.

I will be using it to start veggie plants in spring and maybe grow some threw the winter or prolong them as long as i can. I have some tomatoes potted up now and will be my first attempt .

I'm sure as i get more experienced i will expand in to different plants.

Right now i have a 100' extension cord ran to it for elec. The water is nearby with an old kitchen sink on cinder blocks for rinsing and washing stuff. i set it up outside of the GH on the South west corner near the door.

I do have a dedicated breaker for it in my house breaker box but havn't made the effort to did a ditch and run the wiring to it.I have a box mounted on my meter pole that would be a little closer but harder digging(pick&shovel). Maybe i could hook a plow up and at least loosen the dirt up some. Probably just run some 10/2 with ground for lighting /fans as electric heat would be too expensive here.
