Huntington Plant Sale

The sale is in the back propagation area now and it's very nice. I saw Mr. Carruth there giving rose advice to newbies. I thought it was rather like buying a painting from Rembrandt and not knowing who he was. Meanwhile in the rose garden, there was lots of hooting going on. Lots of ohhs and ahs and smelling of roses and being photographed with them. That's what spring flush should be. I took my little camera and so the pictures aren't the best but anyway I had so much fun. Hoovb showed you lots of DAs so I'll share some little charmers blooming their heads off. The rest I will put on the gallery.

It took me a long time to find out which roses worked for me, in an admittedly difficult environment, and then a rose that worked well for some years, like Burgundy Iceberg, suddenly decided to have blackspot and pass it on. I wish I could start over again with a clean slate and with the knowledge I have now. With roses being taken out or moved, I've often been left with spots to put new roses that are too close to other roses or not right for that particular rose, and glaringly empty spots. The whole thing strikes me as a hodgebodge which is further removed from my dream garden than ever. I hope that with six new roses to plant soon I can try to alleviate some of these defects. The bottom line is - roses are indispensable to me but they're not easy. Ingrid

I sa what was said to be a sinkatana at the store today and it was more glaucus . I restrained myself and wanted to do more research on the cold hardiness of it. It looked nice mwhat ever it was but it was not what you have. HMM. No worries. This place gets nice plants but LOTS of mislabeled stuff.

I've never been to the plant sale, too afraid of crowds. Is it very bad?

Beautiful photos, thanks. Some of those were not in bloom yet when I went.

Great pics! Thanks, Kitty, for those perfect shots. I would love to know what they feed their roses with .... Do they have alkaline clay? Thanks in advance.

Hoovb, when they had the sale in the front, there used to be a stampede for the plants and people would line up an hour ahead. It's better now even though there are people waiting because the areas are spread out and there is a new holding area while you continue to choose plants. The Huntington has volunteers who will take your plants on a cart to the parking area when you are ready to leave. The selection was much better than at the Spring Garden Show in Costa Mesa this year. There were many little Japanese Maples at great prices. I bought 2 big So. CA friendly lilacs for 12 dollars each compared with the 48 dollars for a similar size at Costa Mesa. I got a number of pretty low groundcover type perennials I haven't seen before and some new bulbs to try. I arrived just as the people who had been waiting were going in so I wouldn't have to be in the crush. I was already parking in the back area by then however. Next year, I will have to go early and wait in line to get some of Mr. Carruth's special roses.

Strawberry, I don't know what they are feeding them but whatever it is, the roses are huge this year.

I'll have to try to go next time. I wasn't up to it this year. did they have any "rare roses" ? (not that I need any...)

I'm going to try to get out to Huntington with the twins next week to look at the flush if I can pick a day that's not crazy windy and 90 degrees at the same time. lol

Next year they will have some special roses that Mr. Carruth has selected for propagation just for the sale. I don't know which ones they will be. Maybe we can find out somehow who is doing the propagation and what the list is. I think they will be budded not own root if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the comments on the plant sale, kittymoonbeam. I've always wanted to go, but crowds frighten me. I thought it was in that Huntington article that Weeks was going to do some "classic" roses commercially and that would be the source for the plant sale???--we'll see.
