I'm not familiar with the Boursaults roses but I imagine if they're considered black spot magnets in any other part of the world they'd be magnets in Mississippi. At least that's been my experience in central MS. OTOH, if you can grow Austins successfully and control the fungi it might be worthwhile to give Mme. de Sancy de Parabere a try. According to HMF it will "morph into a monster" also.

I have two found roses that are probably Boursaults.
Both are magnficent and so easy care that it's sad that they aren't surrounded by hundreds of offspring.
Neither is a BS magnet...but both of these are survivors of our hot and humid summers and were planted long before the concepts of fungicides made it to our side of the Blue Ridge/Smokey Mountains.

Thanks, oldblush, for researching that for me. I'm seeing what I assume to be Austins around Madison. The ones planted in filtered light seem to be doing splendidly. I see no disease at all. Of course, they could as easily be from Romanticas from Meilland. Blackspot is thwarted when temperatures exceed ninety-something. I'm hoping those three hot months will allow the Boursault roses to keep their leaves (I know: you have to water like crazy to keep the leaves on during that time). I'm opposed to sprays, but may try the Cornell Mixture this year.

Anntn6b: you're telling me exactly what I wanted to hear. The heat is maybe what the Boursaults lacked in cool-summer climates. After all, plenty of newly discovered roses were sickly in Europe, but robust in the American South.

Nice to see you're near Knoxville. I lived there in my nursery school/kindergarten years. People think Montana is beautiful country. That's only because they haven't seen the Smokey Mountains.

I was very very tempted to get Mme de Sancy de Parabere this year, but then decided against it since it's a big once bloomer and we don't have much space left. However, this Boursault comes highly recommended by the British, e.g. David Austin in his new rose book (The Rose) who calls it the most beautiful of the Boursaults, as well as by the Beales family. I'll probably get it at some point.

I'm not in the deep south, but I do experience really hot and humid summers. I've been growing Mme de Sancy de Parabere and Amadis. Neither is a BS magnet for me...yet. They are rather new, but, they are far more resistant than some other roses that do get some bs for me. I don't spray or coddle my roses.

Sorry for this delayed response. My old Rose books are all packed away. But generally, the big books on roses all start with history sections. The information you're requesting is in one, or several, of those histories.

But if you're looking for a list of those original China roses, I believe that they include Old Blush, Slater's Crimson China, Parson's Pink China, and Hume's Blush Tea Scented China.

I'll try to find relevant paragraphs from my Rose books, as I unpack them.
