Reine des violettes

My teeny tiny band of RDV from last Fall has gotten to be pretty big and it's full or flower buds. So far, I like how it is so vigorous!

Now I am trying to create a rose filled serenity corner with gold and purple roses. The fence I am going to put the roses against is 8'-6", and it's ugly wire. I have Graham Thomas in one spot, and next to it is "Nightowl". Both of these guys should hit 8' no problem. But now I like RDV better than nightowl, but I want to fill up the whole 8'-6" of the fence, and RDV supposedly only hits 6' high. Anyone ever seen RDV get as high as 8' tall?. I know RDV is gangly, it would be a cinch to attach her to the fence vertically and horizontally.

Is Nightowl blooming for you?

Because we had it here for almost 3 years, and saw perhaps 3 blooms.

RDV gets huge in Florida. Some people whack her back before active growth starts in the spring to keep her somewhat compact. Others peg her or train her as a climber. I have one that survived my harsh winter while in a pot this winter. I'm planning on planting her as soon as I get a spot prepped.

If RDV is happy I think she'd fill the space you want her to. She'd be stunning with yellow or gold roses.

You'd get more replies if you posted this on the Antique Roses Forum. I have 'Reine des Violettes' growing somewhat as a climber against a raised deck railing. It has a nice first flush, a moderate second flush in July, and then scattered blooms until Autumn. That may improve, being as mine is only three years old and seems slower to take off than some others. 'Hippolyte' is a once-blooming rose, variously classed as a Gallica, Centifolia, or (more likely correct) Hybrid China. It's more bushy and spreading in habit than 'Reine des Violettes'. About the only things they have in common are that their blooms are in the purple range, and they're Old Garden Roses. A big factor in deciding what will work would be where you're located, and where you want to plant these roses. Again, post this on the other forum, and you'll get lots of responses. Generally, this forum is more about Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, and other more modern roses. :-) ~Christopher

I like those irises too. I wish they bloomed a little longer, though. Yes, you do get a little colder than we do here. We might get one or two nights down to 28F, but mostly in the low 40's or high 30's. Good for things like citrus and avocados. I even have pentunias and snapdragons that survive the winter and regrow in the spring. I don't mean reseed, I mean the same plant survives like a perennial. This is not so good for the roses that need a winter chill to form buds, as they never really go dormant. I do manage to grow a few hostas and astilbes in pots on the patio. The containers cool down more in the winter, and I help them out by dumping ice on top on cold days. They do best the winters that I plug in my garage fridge for tulip bulbs, and put the pots in there for a few months. I wish I could stuff some roses in there! Lisa

I have both Reine des Violettes (the reblooming one, bought from Burlington last year) and NOT Reine des Violettes (once bloomer, thorny) from many years ago. Both are in part shade and they've both survived an average zone 5 winter with most of their canes. The Not RDV obviously only blooms in May-June, but I think it blooms fine in part shade (before a deciduous oak tree nearby leafs out). It might bloom more in more sun, but I can't tell in my case. My real RdV hasn't reached blooming size yet, but I presume she'd be happier in our cold climates with more sun. I think she'd be fine in your sunnier spot if that's where you want to have her, but in my case I have other climbers that demand more sun that need the sunnier spots. I think she's a good choice for your climate in general, though she doesn't get as large as the Canadians would in your region if you really want a large climber. I'd put her in the range of 6-8' if her canes are pulled laterally, at least for Not RdV. Cynthia

Your RDV definitely has spider mites, but the photo you show isn't one of them. They are tiny, usually reddish, and hard to see. You see the damage and the webs more than the mites. They love it hot and dry. Usually you can bring them under control by a daily hard spray of water (being sure to wet all the undersides of the leaves); twice a day if you can get around to it. But be careful not to get the soil too wet while doing it. You don't want to drown her while treating the mites, lol. I've been known to lay pots on their side and spray the plant without wetting the soil. Your RDV may be too big/awkward for that, though. EDIT: Also, for future reference, that is a lovely pot she's in, but it will be very difficult to get her out of it when it's time to re-pot or plant in the ground. I never plant anything but annuals in pots that are smaller at the top than at the bottom, as once the roots fill out the soil in the pot, they become a "plug" that keeps you from removing the plant. You'll have to sacrifice a lot of the root ball, and/or possibly the pot itself, to get her out. :( John

Do you, or anyone on the east coast, grow RdV without spray? If so, how does she do? I have her, and she's very weak, but, I started with a weak plant, I think, so I'm wondering whether I should try a better clone.

Jeri, yes nightowl bloomed well for me last year. Right now it's got about 5-6 buds. But RDV has blown me away, with over 30 buds on a still young 1 year old band size plant.-Which is why I am thiking of evicting Nightowl

Yeah, we finally evicted Nightowl, too.
It will be replaced with Bloomfield Courage, which is pretty much a once-bloomer, but has some history to recommend it

Robert, so far I am growing Reines des Violettes no spray. I had one at my Ocala home, and grew her no spray, but didn't have her in the ground very long before selling that house. It wasn't long enough to truly evaluate her no spray.

I now have another that survived the winter in a pot, and is not planted out yet. I haven't sprayed her and she looks wonderful, but we aren't into blackspot pressure season yet either. She survived frozen roots in a pot this winter and is now leafed out and has a few buds. I feel this says a great deal about her so far.

Keep in touch and I'll let you know how it goes. As soon as I can RoundUp more pasture grass, I'm going to get her planted.

Sandy, I appreciate your comments. I had tried RdV from pickering on multiflora last year, but I must've gotten a bad batch from them because most of my roses from that order (about 25) died...most were David Austins, so I'm not sure if it was because they were DA varieties or a bad order. I had tried a bunch of DA from Pickering on multiflora because I had great success previously with The Alexandra Rose and Compte de Champagne both on multiflora from Pickering. I wonder whether I just got lucky with those two varieties.

I'm totally jealous! I planted a Rouge Valley Roses RdV band in Jan and it hasn't grown at all. I worry a bit that maybe I'm doing something wrong! Oh well. Goodluck with yours! :)

Robert, I grow Reine des Violettes no spray, and it does well for me. I got it from Wayside a number of years ago, it's a grafted plant.

Aimee -- Be patient.
Your little rose is probably still growing roots.

Give it time. Little band plants require a certain amount of patience.
Here, they go into 1-G, and join their brothers and sisters until they stick their roots out the bottom of their pot.
Then, depending upon circumstances, they can either go into the ground or into a 5-G.

Sometimes it's difficult to wait. DH recently reminded me that he is 69, and would be happy to speed some things up, just in case. But really, plants, if watered and fed a little, grow when they are ready to.

Pickering normally is great. However with Austin's all 9 I had died so maybe it as the A's not the source of them.

I'm glad that you posted this. A few years ago I had ordered a bunch of roses (mostly gallicas and 2 DA's) from Pickering...and they ALL did great. Then, the next year, having been so impressed, I ordered a bunch of DA's from them and a few other roses, and most of them never took off. I lost probably about 23 out of 25. I thought it was that they were DAs that just didn't like my garden, but I'm now wondering whether the shipment was just bad (perhaps frozen?)

I may have to try some DAs from them again. It seems too coincidental that the first two DAs did so well, and nearly all the others didn't even make it through one year. Incidentally, the two that did well, and continue to flourish, are The Alexandra Rose and Compte de Champaigne. Reine des Violettes was ordered in the "bad" order, and NEVER took off...it's dead as can be.
