Planting with Tapla's mix

Tapla is a regular on the compost and soil site. His mix is a blend of Pine bark fines, Perlite, peat moss and a slow release fertilizer plus lime.

I have a Nymphenburg that is several years old. When I checked this Spring it barely had a pulse. One tiny bud. When I dug it up the soil fell away from the roots. Not a fine root in sight.

So I dug a deep hole and filled the area around the bottom with this mix. That was like 4 days ago. Now that tiny bud is growing along with three others!

the goal o Tapla in developing his particular mix it to find a medium that drains well AND has a pore structure that air can penetrate. I never fully realized the importance of oxygen for roots. Probably as important as water.

Anyway I'm going to try this again for problem roses as well as use it exclusively in potting hybrid teas.
