Twilite Prairieblues is a cross between Baptisia australis and sphaerocarpa.

In the link to The Well Tended Perennial Garden book it says "...reseeding usually does not occur with Baptisia..." so it wouldn't seem on the face of it that reseeding is a problem of major proportions.

Tony Avent from Plant Delights Nursery notes following about growing from seed in general:

"Fresh sown baptisia seed germinates quite easy and quite fast...usually in two weeks. Old stored seed, on the other hand is very difficult and slow to sprout. I recommend that all old baptisia seed be placed in a Styrofoam cup and doused in boiling water and allowed to cool prior to planting. This will begin to break down the seed coat and encourage germination."

The Twilite Prairieblues is a beauty. Enjoy them.

Someone who's grown them will chime in...I just like to research pretty plants even if I can't have them. :)

I guess you bought some Baptisia australis. I got my first plant by accident. I worked as a gardener for some private owner. And the lady told me to remove that plant (in a shady spot as recommended by the nursery!!) as she didnt like it. Having no clue what it was I potted it anyway and it made it through the winter on my balcony. The next spring I planted it in a mixed perennial bed at some old ladys garden. About 3 years later I could ID the plant as Baptisia. In the meantime it had developed nicely. A tough plant about knee high with proper stalks, growing on poor sandy soil, in a sunny spot, with ca. 580 ml/year and just some ocasional watering in the summer.I never found any seedlings. One reason could be that the owner cut back all the perennials in autumn prefering the bare `tidy`look for winter.

At another occasion I tried to raise them from seeds in a seed mixture but they didnt make it. The bed wasnt watered at all while the stuff was supposed to germinate. I guess that was the problem.
Just be patient with them as they are likely to sulk slightly in their first ca. 2 seasons.

Baptisia australis would self-sow for me like crazy, but the seedlings were easy to hoe or pull out. I love this plant.

I had Baptisia Twilite Prairieblues in another garden for a couple years when it first came out, but did not notice any seedlings.

Baptisia is the one plant that I miss now that I live in California. I think I had about 10 of them in my old garden.

Why in the world would you not want some seedlings of this gorgeous plant?

Just donate them to a local plant sale if you don't want them.

Twilite Prairieblues becomes an enormous plant--some 5 ft x 5 ft. I had to remove the one I had and though it was only 3 years old, it had huge thick roots. A friend and I hacked it out, with no attempt to get a big root ball, and then I cut it into three parts with an axe. Friends report that all sections are thriving, though bloom this year is unlikely. It's a myth that Baptisias are hard to move--except for the gardener trying to hack them out--but they survive always.

Mollyjenning: Your feelings about this plant seem to reflect many others whose comments I've read on other websites. I'm new to them, but I'll probably be feeling the same way. Mine certainly look beautiful sitting in their pots and I can only just imagine full size plants in full bloom in my garden, but they are very large plants and I have just so much room in my yard for more. Our area had a plant sale last weekend and I'm sure wouldn't mind donations in the future if I get volunteers. I can hardly wait to show your comment, lacyvail, to my husband. He's the one that does the major digging projects in our garden. Guess we'd best be absolutely sure of placement for his sake. Reminds me of a Nietzsche quote, ""What does not kill me, makes me stronger" :-)

I've always been interested in this plant, so its great to read everyone's comments. Does anyone have a picture from their garden?

Does anyone know why my nearly side by side Babtista plants both grow beautiful green stalks in early spring/summer, and leaves, but only one ever sets blooms and makes pea pods? It's really odd! They both flowered for about 3 years, and then about 5 years ago, the one just stopped blooming. We do not prune these plants at all, but in our climate they die back completely over the winter. Any suggestions/insights welcome.
