Hi GW GH'ers--been MIA for awhile

But I'm back. I guess I inadvertently took a hiatus from my GH since about Christmas last year (I have the HFGH 10x12) It has successfully held up to 3? summers now and the same # of winters. If anyone recalls 2 years ago, I lost some panels that blew out during a nearby tornado (in the Macon area, but we got some fierce winds here too) After this happened, my back, West facing wall had 2 major reinforcements using EMT across each back corner installed, which has saved it more than once!!! other than a few strong winds popping out the clips, it's holding up fine, no apparent UV damage etc.

This past winter it pretty much funtioned as an over wintering home for some tropicals and cold sensitive fruit trees. I did not start any seedlings this year (got caught up in a new venture at our local antique mall, so I've been busy with that since December). I have also been frequenting the home decor forum more than anywhere else. But I wanted to stop by and say HEY!!!

I still have the aluminet 70% shade cloth in place, it stays on year round and works effectively at both heat retention and shade in the summer. I wouldn't really have believed it, but it worked that way.

I have not used fans at all this summer, even though there are plants still inside and doing fine and only used space heaters a few weeks this winter. I am able to open the 4 vents and leave them up all summer along with the doors open too.

It's about time for a spring cleaning but it's been over 100 here for a while and even though inside the GH isnt 100, the humidity will kill ya.

I have missed you guys and hope to hear from a few familiar "faces".

Will have to spend some time catching up on the threads.

Have wondered what happened to you. Glad to see you back.
I still love my 2 10X12 HFGH together. ANd still have abour 80 orchis hanging from he roof. Have even had many baby orchids that I divided and sold.
Been very hot down here in Ocala, FL with little rain.
Not a nice summer.

welcome back, I too have not been on here in a few years. When the kids are babies it's hard to do anything extra all time is focused on them, plus work, continuing education, so there is no time. But now that my son is now almost 4 and my daughter 9 mo, its more feasible to do other things. My new venture is attempting to grow some veggies and greens for the winter, Never tried it before but will this year to see how it will work out.

Hi Everyone First I truly apologize for dropping the ball. I should have been a better host or reached out to see if there was someone else who could host while I couldn't. As things kept happening in my life, I kept thinking, it's just this one thing or once we get over this crisis, I'll have time to get back to everything again. And it just hasn't stopped. Not as an excuse but only for explanation, the last few weeks have been a turmoil with my grandmother in & out of a coma, my parents possibly getting a divorce, and my own job up in the air. It's still not over, but things have calmed down enough to come back to this. In the last couple weeks, I did try to contact Peggy (pdsavage) a few times with no response. I also know that Sherri tried to contact her to confirm receipt of the box, again with no response. At this point, I'm assuming that the box & Peggy are long gone, which is sad & disappointing since this was supposed to be a friendly swap. For my part, I'm sure that many of you are also disappointed with me & my lack of attention to this RR. Please believe me that it was not because I didn't care & I really feel so sorry that it's ended up this way. Anyway, for now, I think I cannot continue to host this. I know a lot of you lost many valuable seeds & cuttings as well as time & money & trust. Again I'm so sorry for that, & will contact you individually about it. OMG, I just now saw this thread! Thank you all so much for thinking of me. Both Jane and Jaybird emailed me this week wondering if I was ok. I was so touched by that :~) As I mentioned to both of them, I tend to get very overextended and stressed out during the Christmas Season . . . and my sweet family suffers because of it. So, after some soul-searching, I decided to limit my internet time to a bare minimum to see if it would help, and it did! I did miss you all, though, and popped back in every day or two to see how everybody was doing, especially Jane and Karen's fathers. I had a wonderful and relaxing December with my family and friends. I'm going to start a quick thread to tell you about it in a sec. And, many thanks for the anniversary wishes. We'll be celebrating our 28th on January 15th and I'm still crazy about the guy ;^D Lynn

Whew. I thought you were talking only about me. The only photos I have posted of the kitchen are the ones that the photographer took when shooting the backsplash. And now, I have to find all of my photos (from my old blackberry and the old computer and get them uploaded, again, to Photobucket. The Kitchen Folder I had on PB disappeared. I guess I'm guilty of wanting it to be really done. How's this? I keep moving the punch list from place to place as we work on other projects. It was on the doors to the laundry room closet, then the back door and then I found it folded in 1/2 on the washer. Well, last night I grabbed it and taped it up to the inside of the closet in the laundry room (look closely at the photo below of the closet, you can see it). You have to understand...the laundry room ONLY has a Washer & Dryer in it....the walls have been painted, the doors are MIA, the floor has been ripped up....all in anticipation of getting that gorgeous floor that WE won. Want a sneak pic of how it's coming along? I've placed some tiles on the floor with a piece of trim, so here you go. And I promise to post finished kitchen pictures too, soon. I mean I guess you won't notice if the backdraft thingy is in the venting or not, right? (Oh and we've been working on the basement and I redecorated my 20 yo dd's room--been kinda crazy.) I grew up in Phoenix and lived in Tucson for about 10 years. In Phoenix you absolutely need regular central air and heat for comfort. Its just too dang hot for a swamp cooler to work. And that's dry heat. Tucson is at a slightly higher elevation and doesn't get quite as hot. I had a window swamp cooler in a tiny house there, but there were days when it just didn't work; either too hot or too humid. It wasn't a huge deal at the time, I was young, I was renting, I worked during the days. But in a retirement home, where you might be spending more time in the home, I would def go for maximum comfort. If you got a heat pump, you would have air and heat without a furnace. You can use a heat pump with ducts or mini-splits. You wouldn't need radiant heat or a wood stove. The heat pump can be installed outside like regular ac with splitters that come through the wall in each room and use wall mounted boxes. In a house like you are designing for ductless, you would probably need three boxes. Another advantage, is that you can turn off the boxes in rooms you are not using so you don't always need to cool or heat the entire house. For example, at night when sleeping, you could just use the box in the bedroom. Once up, you could just use the living area. You wouldn't need to use the box in the second bedroom unless you had guests. I think a heat pump with splitters is more expensive to purchase, but it the long run, it would save on electricity. A heat pump with ducts would be ideal, but you wouldn't be able to turn off the boxes in individual spaces.

I've been gone awhile also. We sold the HFGH and kept the larger Rion. We may be moving to FL next spring so I've cut back drastically on the number of plants I have. The Rion has held up well to storms and the fierce summer sun. I'm sure if and when we get to FL I'll want another GH. Because of how the Rion is made, leaky with cheap sponge to fill gaps, it may not be another Rion.

So this is the old timer's thread.

My GH is cooking along. Have about 12 carambola ripening on the tree, plus jaboticaba, yellow guava, Surinam Cherries, pomegranates. No bananas this year as I removed Dwarf Cavendish and replaced with Dw Namwah and Dw Red. Hopefully bananas next year.

Just got a Sapodilla and a June Plum, but the June Plum suffered greatly in shipping. Hoping it will recover.

Just ordered a new RO pump and filters, as the pump burned out. Close call, as it burned out while I was out of town and I got back to find I had just one day of water left. My wife would have been in trouble within a day or two!
