'Chocolate' Joe Pye Weed

This is a spin-off of another post - the other Joe Pye post got me wondering just how tall "Chocolate" gets. I'm hoping I positioned it correctly in the bed...

How tall does it get?

In my bed it has never grown to more than about 2 1/2 ft.

Lol, I believe that was my original post. Its funny this came up, yesterday I just moved my Chocolate JP. Well, just like everyone said, my JP never reached much more than 2 1/2ft. I had mine planted in semi-shade, which delayed the boom time so long that early frosts got them while they were budding! I couldnt let that happen again, as Ive seen lots of wonderful pictures of the flowers here, so I moved it to a full sun area. Im hoping it will do better here. Good luck to you too mxk3!

I've got 6 of these plants, 3 were purchased at a nursery so these are presumed to be the true cultivar, and 3 were swap seedlings. There is not much difference in the coloring as far as I can see, maybe one of the swap plants is a little lighter. The original plant purchased about 5 years ago is the darkest, but it's also growing in the most sun and that may intensify the color. I have never had even one seedling from these plants - maybe because it blooms very late, and may not have time for the seeds to mature? I also mulch.

Yes pink flowers would be fabulous! I love pink. But I like the hazy clouds of white flowers too. Campanula, this is definitely a weedy species, and makes abundant seedlings. Although the Chocolate plants bloom a bit later than the plain green species, I think the two are cross-pollinating some in the back yard. The offspring of the Chocolate plants (those seedlings showing up closer to the mother plants) all show some purple color, but usually not as much as the cultivar itself. Farther back, the green species seedlings are spreading like crazy. They are very drought and shade tolerant - also critter proof as nothing eats them. I've got them mixed with other fairly aggressive eastern US woodland natives like Helianthus divaricatus and Aster cordifolius and sorta let them have a free for all.

Eupatorium Chocolate is a beautiful plant. Mine is in its 3rd year growing in the garden, and it is bigger and more beautiful than ever. I love the foliage, and love the little fuzzy white flowers that cover the plant in early fall. The flowers attract zillions of pollinators looking to take advantage of one of the last sources of pollen in the season. Mine is growing in full sun, with somewhat dry and well-drained conditions. I rarely give it extra watering, unless it's been dry for a couple weeks, so it seems fairly drought-tolerant now that it is established. Molanic, you are a very good person to want to share what you have...that means a lot to anyone. I wish you could see my own gardens, in them I don't have many "fancy" plants, not many hybrids, I have mostly good old fashioned plants. When I talk about the economy of Winter Sowing, I often mention that we should grow some of the seeds at the dollar store because they grow so well and they are always as beautiful and charming as any plant that could cost so much more. These simple beauties were favorites in the gardens of our parents and grandparents--they were favorites because they were more than just pretty flowers or good cropping vegetables, they were also easy to grow and didn't require extra care or expensive soil treatments or plant foods to thrive. In my garden I think that simple is best, and for most of us with our busy lives, sometimes simple is the right thing to do. Trudi

My oldest Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate' is growing in full sun, a bit dry and sandy, and it grows pretty large. About 3-4 feet tall x 3-4 feet wide. By the end of the season it starts to crowd out its neighbors. I really should divide it this year.

Last fall I bought 2 more on sale, and picked up some seedlings at the fall swap. Those are planted in partial sun and I'm curious to see how they'll do.

A pic from last year, early October, when it was in full bloom. The crimson color of the foliage tones down a bit by the end of the season -

Great pic! I really enjoyed the flowers last fall, they lasted a decent amount of time, too. I have mine in full sun, so hopefully they'll develope the great foliage color. Sounds like I planted in good spot for the height - middle of the border. I'll keep them there and see how they do.

Mine died over the winter, it was submerged in water for two months from too much rain and drowned, along with a few other plants, but I'm actually surprised that a lot of things in the bed that plant was in didn't die and came back. I think I'm going to have to try another one, but in a different bed.
