HFGH #2 on order!!!!

I am so excited. My second HFGH is on order. Should have it in a couple of weeks which is fine because I have lots of prep work to do. I'm a small woman so it will take me a while. DH has agreed to put this one together, he did the first one, if I do the prep. Considering the nightmare it is of putting these together I'm getting the best part of the deal. LOL

We are going to put it back to back with the first one, taking out what would then be the middle. I want doors on both ends to help with creating a breeze to keep it cooler. I already have a solar pool cover (thanks to Cactusfreaks suggestion) and I bought it big enough for two in anticipation.

This one won't need shelves because it's purpose is for the big pots that need to be wintered over.

Ok, I'm rambling but I'm excited and had to share with folks who would understand!!!

WOW! I was thinking of doing the same thing but not sure how to go about it. I have really enjoyed the HFGH we have but it fills up so fast. I hope you will post pics when your addition is complete.

This spring was crazy in my greenhouse. You couldn't get a 1 inch plant in it by the time planting time got here. I had a flowering maple that lived under a tall bench all winter. Bless it's heart, it even bloomed under there.

I will definitely be posting pics of the whole operation. I'm really looking forward to it actually.

Maybe we need to start a HFGH club. There are clubs for everything else these days. LOL

Great pictures! Fortunately, the tree in our way died about a year before we put up our greenhouse (still had to cut it down, though!) We had a furry OSHA inspector too (all extra paws and hands were greatly appreciated.) I love my 10x12 HFGH, enjoying it for my third year. It's totally stuffed with plants, year round. "- We will add more clips to prevent the panels from flying off in the wind - a major concern." Sounds like you've read the archived threads here about the recurring problem of lost HFGH panels. In addition to extra clips (we did that too) it's pretty easy to add self-tapping screws to the panels, as even more protection against panel loss. The 10x12 is pretty tall and makes an even worse target for wind damage, but there are some scary threads archived here about wind-damaged 6x8 HFGHs as well. Here are some photos showing how we screwed the panels into the aluminum frame (thanks to previous GardenWeb forum members who suggested this improvement.) Part Six, Adding the Panels "- Depending on the temperatures, may add a blind on the western end to prevent sunburn and excessive late afternoon heat." I definately need shadecloth on the roof, west end, and south side (my succulents and cacti cook in there without it.) I also believe that adding shadecloth has helped to increase the lifespan of my HFGH panels in our sunny climate. (I used Aluminet shadecloth.) Some GardenWeb HFGH owners have reported problems with the HFGH panels deteriorating after exposure to sun, but others don't seem to have this problem. My panels have yellowed, but I see no other signs of deterioration (fingers crossed.) "In winter, may add water jugs as heat sinks in cooler weather." In theory it seems like this would help, but the general consensus seems to be that you'd need very large containers of water to retain enough heat to truly benefit you into the wee hours of a cold morning. Most small greenhouses can't afford to give up the high percentage of space required to make this work, but there's lots of good reading on this topic in this forum (posted by folks who are much smarter than I am.) "- Wish list: shelves, solar fan, temperature activated window control" Just a warning, the HFGH solar fan is not powerful enough to adequately cool your greenhouse (sounds good, but doesn't quite work.) If you do a search in this forum for HFGH solar fan, there's a thread with a knowledgeable poster sharing his calculations that a 6x8 HFGH would need three of the HFGH solar fans to exchange enough air to drop the temps (if my memory is right.) There are also some posts from folks saying the HFGH vent openers don't last long at all, and it's best to research and purchase other brands that have a better track record. I built this greehouse specificially for starting bedding plants. I don't start heating it until the first week in Feb. At the time I didn't think a ground heat sink would have that much effect so I didn't do it. If I had it to do over again I would put the lip of the 2x4 base to the inside and put some foam board into a trench and up to the redwood around the base on the outside. The insulation on the north side just goes to the bottom of the redwood. The trays didn't melt uniformly along the whole shelf. It was just the 2 trays or so in the corners on the top shelf where the light would get concentrated. None of the seeds in those trays germinated however. Low angle sun reflecting from the top combined with the corner reflection against the dark plastic of the trays made for some real hot spots. I you look at my weather station at http://wx.uvci.com I have a temp sensor in a tray of soil on the soil heating germination mat. When the soil is dry and a bright sunny day the temp will get up to 130 easily. Another change I would make is to have the potting bench in the end just sit on supports rather than build it in. That way it could be easily taken out when not in use. It would make getting to the last two feed of shelf much easier. It also gets a lot of water on it when watering which has caused the composit material it is made from to expand. I will probably replace it next year and when I do It will not be built in permanently like it is now.

HFGH Difference between Item #93358 and Item #69893

Hello johnnyq627, The #93358 10x12 is the same as my greenhouse (built over six years ago, and doing great.) The #69893 seems to be a newer version of the same greenhouse. I have both manuals, and there are a few small differences between the kits (changes to a few of the parts.) They have modified the door parts a bit, and there are some changes to the parts used to form the floor plates and ceiling plates. I didn't know there was a difference in the panel sizes between the two kits, thanks for that heads up! I'm not sure why they made these changes, so I'm no help in comparing the two. I've only built the 93358 version that you ordered. I haven't had problems with any of the areas they changed, so I don't think it matters much which version you order. It is good to know that there are two versions now of the 10x12, and if you ever have to order extra parts, be sure to indicate which kit version you have. Your kit should come with a manual, but if it doesn't (it happens) be sure to download the correct 93358 manual from the Harbor Freight website. That's an awesome idea Vamptoo. Wish I'd thought of it. I also bolted two together but I'm saving the extra door as a screen door to use during the summer.

There's two ways to add on. You could just build two frames and bolt them together. I built the first frame and then built the second frame directly on the first one leaving off the end on the second one. The 2 gutter pieces have to be trimmed slightly butt up against one another. And the end pieces of the first one have to be drilled to bolt the new frame to the old....GEEZ this sounds complicated, but it's really not.

That's why I jumped when the DH offered to put it together if I did the prep. He's an Engineer and can figure these kinds of things out whereas I wouldn't really have a clue. Putting together the first one was really a scream. At one point we were both sitting on the flooring laughing like maniacs at the directions for the door. Or should I say the lack of directions for the door.

I'm wondering how I could have a bar on one side, the length of one of the GH's that would bear the weight of about 8 hanging pots. Any suggestion??

Sure...There's no reason to hang the bar....try building 2x4 extensions from your benches in the appropriate location and run the bar....electrical conduit comes to mind...over the ends or through a hole drilled through the 2x4's

You're right... building it was a real @#$%^!...LOL
but I did it myself...WOOHOO...guess we can do anything if we try...:)

Hi Vamptoo;

Sorry but no pics. But not to worry, it sounds more difficult than it is. Basically you're just leaving off one wall (in your case the back wall) of one of the houses.

The only trimming involved should be the gutter pieces (#39 I think) as there's too much of an overhang and the two halves won't fit together right. Also remove some supports from the center section of the back wall for access so you can walk through. I wuld leave the side sections of the back wall for extra support. Otherwise the rest is just cut and fit as he see's necessary.

Really you're just building a second one on the first. As I said it sounds MUCH more complicated than it is...the first one was the hardest to put up.but the add-on was MUCH easier.

Thanks for the pic. Now that you mention it, he sent me some stuff on this before. I wonder if it was before my laptop crashed. I think I will email him again and beg for forgiveness and see if he will send it again.

I just found out that it has been back ordered to Aug 16th. I'm rather disappointed but I guess it gives me more time for some prep work. DH is working up his 'bribe' list for assistance. Hee hee
