Thalictrum "Evening Star"

Some of the Thalictrums are quite showy e.g. "Splendide". But "Evening Star" is a much smaller, understated variety. I have had it my my garden for 3 years now and it is just this season that it has started to come into its own.

'ispahan', I have none of the ones you have listed but I can give two thumbs up to the most petite thalictrum I possess...."Evening Star". I have several and even though they are all in significant shade they are in flower most of the season; at the same time having wonderful foliage.. I also have "Sparkler" and in this its first full season in my garden it grew to about 4 feet in height with white flowers...nothing outstanding...maybe it will be better in subsequent years.

Sorry - no photo but I think the most unusual plant in my garden is Persicaria virginiana - Virginia knotweed. Yes, it's a relative of that nasty, invasive Japanese knotweed but it's both benign and native and so far has reseeded in a most well-behaved manner. It's a lovely perennial that happily grows to a moderate size in part sun, part shade and everything in between. The foliage is variegated green and white and sports a burgundy chevron on each leaf so it packs a wallop and stands out in the perennial beds, growing to about the size of astilbe or a medium hosta. It blooms in late fall but the seed-sized flowers, while numerous, are insignificant.

Well, now we know it is a Thalictrum and may be the one you named. Someone mentioned the native T. thalictroides, but the ones I have are not like this one. Anyway, I think the mystery is solved. Thanks to all. Now I have another one to post later. Tags go missing due to critters and wind, and last year due to an injury I didn't do much if any gardening. Need to sharpen skills again.

Yours looks a whole lot better than mine at this point. I ended up moving mine from the front to the back after dismantling part of my front shade garden last year. It is a lot smaller now unfortunately.

On an interesting side note...it had heaved a bit and I buried it deeper a few weeks ago. I noticed the most unusual thing, this Thalictrum seems to have very tuber-like roots to it. There were tons of little tubers coming from the plant. I took two of them and am doing a bit of an experiment (dusted with rooting hormone and plopped under my grow light) to see if they root out. Who knows, maybe I will have a little constellation of Evening Stars around here if it works, LOL. ;-)

Although one can't see them in the picture very well, there really are some small pink flowers hear the top of the plant.
