What are those large stately trees with mottled bark?

I just want a quick confirmation on what a certain type of tree I'm seeing around where I live is, I see these trees a lot in the more rural areas or near old homes and homestead properties. They can be HUGE, with giant trunks and very distinct white mottled bark with patches of tan or buff color. I think they have somewhat star shaped leaves which always makes me want to say sweet gum but the bark is wrong right? My second guess would be sycamore...they're gorgeous though, pretty much the biggest trees I see around here in terms of diameter. I'm 21, I really wish chestnut trees were still around, I would have loved to see them when were old mature ones around.
