GT5000 Maintenance

I have a Craftsman GT5000 with a Kohler Pro 25hp engine (model CV730-0017). I want to change the oil, so I took a look at the tractor, didn't see the drain plug. If at first I don't succeed the instruction manual I shall read, and it referred to a drain tube (didn't get one w/ the tractor) and a valve at the bottom of the dipstick/filler tube. Now I may be completely blind, but I'm not finding it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not usually this mechanically challenged. I regularly do my own maintenance and I've even replaced engines in pickups (and yes they ran again afterwards), so I should be able to do this...

I do not have a Craftsman but I do have a Kohler in a Cub Cadet so I will try to help.The drain should be on the right side facing the front or sitting on the seat.But it could be on the left.Look for the oil filter its ussualy right below it.Close to the frame and back more then likley.That why they have the drain hose.You could use a piece of old garden hose maybe to drain it.My drain valve is a yellow plastic push in and turn gizmo and you put the hose on before you push in and turn other wise you have a mess.

How about the GT5k manuals. They should be explicit on what to do, and if you don't have a manual you download for the Sears site...under "parts", I think.

Bad news. When I looked at the crankcase under the flywheel a little closer today I found a big ol crack. See photo. The best price I can find on the internet for a close match is $1,000. Ouch!!! It is for a Kohler CV730-0039. The tractor has a CV730-0017 in it now. Anybody put a Kawasaki in a GT5000? It is a little more but people seem to like them. I don't know if it would fit exhaust and motor mount wise. Just a thought. I don't want to just put a short block in it because they are $750. Just $250. shy of an entire engine. It may have to sit a few months while I search for a better price for an engine. If I go with the new Kohler engine this tractor will have cost me $1330. which is more than I want to pay for a 2003 Craftsman. If it was a yellow and green garden tractor it would be a no brainer (no offense to Craftsman owners). On the plus side it would have a new engine and the body and deck including the mandrels are in excellent shape. The only unknown is the shape of the transaxle. Since these transaxles are supposedly not serviceable it should not have suffered too much from lack of maintenance. I saw the stickey for changing the oil over on the My Tractor website. Is it worth it to put a new engine in a 2003 GT5000? Here is a link that might be useful:

In looking at the wiring diagrams for both the machines (917.276020 & 917.276310), I see no differences between the two except for the Kohler version (020) featuring an operator presence relay where the Briggs version (310) features a more "complex" seat switch to accomplish the same goal. If,........you are connecting the white wire to the small terminal on the starter solenoid, you are making the correct connection,........AND the solenoid is in fact mounted to a grounded, metal surface or has been provided with a separate grounding jumper wire to ground the solenoid case! So, you might want to test that the solenoid is grounded by touching the probe of a test light (or volt meter) to the battery positive post and the other end/lead to the metal case of the solenoid body. If you detect voltage or the light burns, the solenoid is grounded. If you don't detect voltage, it is not grounded and you need to address that first. So let's go through some checks to determine what the trouble might be. The following outline is a step by step that will guide you through. Refer to the wiring diagram for your 917.276020 for the identifying "alpha characters" I refer to in the text. Make certain there is not a blown fuse before you do these tests. (begin test outline) It could be a "bad key switch" but my feeling is "bad clutch/brake switch", but it could be a "bad PTO switch" just as easy, so let's do some testing first. You have a volt meter and/or 12V test light? Be advised that moving or wiggling wires while doing these tests could result in continuity being accidently restored AND this might cause the starter to engage when you don't expect it to. To guard against this, unplug the small white wire from the starter solenoid and cover the wire terminal with tape to prevent a short. First off, you will need to access the backside of the key switch. Step 1. Find the WHITE wire on the back of key switch connector. (leave the connector attached to the switch) While holding the key in the start position, probe the area where the white wire enters the connector body with a test light or a volt meter. You should detect voltage on the test light or the volt meter. If you do not detect voltage, replace the key switch. If you detect voltage, go to step 2. Step 2. Find the PTO switch and identify terminals C & G on the switch. Probe terminal C while the key is in start position. If you detect voltage at C, probe terminal G next. If you detect voltage at C but not at G, replace the PTO switch (make double dang sure the PTO switch is in the OFF position). If you detect voltage at C & G, go to step 3. Step 3. Locate the clutch/brake interlock switch (should be near the pedal or close by, must be attached so pedal linkage can operate the switch. This switch will feature 4 wires, 2 will be white. With the key in the start position, and the pedal locked or held down, probe the white wires of the brake/clutch switch. If you detect voltage on one white wire only, make certain that the switch plunger is actually moving in far enough to operate the switch. If the plunger is moving far enough to operate the switch, but you still detect voltage on just 1 white wire of the switch, replace the clutch/brake switch. The seat switch does not inhibit cranking on this mower, it only functions to kill the ignition spark. Malfunctions in the PTO switch or the clutch/brake switch are capable of killing spark AND inhibiting the starter. Remember to reconnect the white wire to the starter solenoid after testing. I hope this helps in troubleshooting the interlock circuits. (end outline) After doing these tests, post back your results.

Does your deck spindles have greaseable zerks? Have you greased them before each mowing? If NOT then there's your problem. Trying not to be scarcastic, but there's some people out there who just put in gas and don't do the proper maintenance each time they mow. I have a 2003 GT5K, but it has a 48" deck with around 170hrs on it and it's still going strong. I use synthetic wheel bearing grease on the spindles as it's a high speed/temperature grease. I also took off the outer spindle pulley protection covers to keep an eye on the grass cutting buildup which has a tendency to buildup around the spindles and burn them out due to the heat buildup. If you do remove the spindle covers, do so at your own safety, as now you have moving parts out in the open to catch on pants or getting your feet tangled in the pulleys while in operation if you forget or slip while getting on/off tractor while deck still engaged. Also a couple times a season(usually beginning and towards the end) I remove deck to scrape out old grass clippings and repaint the underside. This gives me a good chance to check blades,deck belt and hand spin blades to check for binding/grinding and replace/repair anything if needed. Good luck Tim

OK, I'll guess it needs a good carb. cleaning and fuel system clean up? Which this costs you nothing but time. First I would remove the carb. disassemble it Clean it using carb. cleaner in the spray can. Use the red nozzle provided on the side of the can for the small passages. Blow them let them set and them blow them out, hopefully after the first blow the carb. cleaner will loosen any hard particles and the second (or third) blowing will clean out the passage. Then I would remove the gas tank, Clean it out by either scrubing with a bottle brush or something on that line, or using a pressure washer and rinsing out with fresh gas. Next I would inspect and blow out the fuel lines from the tank to the filter ( I would replace it while I had it off) and from the filter to the carb. (if it has fuel pump you need to inspect the vacuum line on briggs, Most kohlers have a mechancial vacuum pump) Now assemble every thing fill the gas tank pull the fuel line off at the filter hold it down till all the air is removed and you get a solid stream of fuel connect it and install the clamps. Now you have to prime the carb. till gas is pulled up through the fuel pump (if you have one) to the carb., fills the carb. up. After the engine is running you may have to make some carb. idle adjustments if you tampered with the adjustment screws and didn't count the turns and get them back in the same spot. Along with fuel system clean up I also check the air filter, oil level, and remove the plugs, clean, regap, and install them. If that don't fix it your carb. maybe still dirty (plugged up, carb. adjustments are off, or you have ignition problems. But usually fuel system clean will fix it and minimum cost and maintenance time providing you have the skills to do it? If not time to pay the piper.

On the right side (Opposite side from the filter),look directly behind the frame a little ways back from the tire. Turn the tire to the left will give you a little more room. You can see the top of the tube above the frame and the bottom of the tube looking under the tractor. Looking at the top, you can see which way to twist, then pull down--oput comes the oil. You can find a peice of hose to fit over the tube at Lowes. About a 4" piece pushed up on tube before you open and It drains neatly into a empty gallon windshield washer fluid bottle.

Thanks for the tip. I don't know what the people that wrote my manual were thinking. The picture and description didn't match what I got. I also did not get the drain tube (I know because I kept the book, the deck wrench and the level all together in my shop). Fortunately, a piece of drip line fit perfectly! I really should have done this a long time ago I guess! Thanks again, your tip let me figure out what I was looking at.

They used two different types on the 2004 GT5000. There both located on the right side of the engine. One is real hard to get at and you have to turn a little yellow knob at the top of it to drain the oil. The other kind is really easy. There's a little brass plug that you just open and the oil will drain down the hose. The plastic hose is 8 inches long and 3/8 inch diameter. If you have an Auto-Zone in your area you can buy a STP oil filter ,Part
#S-3512. It takes 2 quarts of oil when you change the filter. Make sure you use 10/30 WT HD Oil when you change it. If you need any other part nunbers like the air filter and pre air filter, Gas filter, Spark plugs, ect. I have them Just e-mail me. If you can find a WIX filter the part # is 51056 . I've been using the STP on mine and my oil is always clean between changes. Hope this helps. Good Luck ! Pap

I need a battery for my GT5000. I have been checking around and find them a little expansive. Is $44.00 and $50.00 for a 340 CCA battery an average price? Lowes has some, but with lower CCA's. The tractor calls for a minimum of 280 CCA. I have checked some of the battery distributors on the internet, but the highest rateing was 24AH. Minimum for the GT5000 in 35AH.
Any suggestions as to the best place to purchase a battery?

I had a good running GT5000. I decided to change the hyrdo rear end. I pulled out the bottom Plug that has a gear in it. Drained all the oil. Refillled it with 3-1/2 qts and it will not move. The disengage bar seems to be playing a roll in this , itried everything, If i put the gear lever in forward and pull the rear disengage lever and let it go the machine jumps forward. like its not gettting in gear. Any help would be appreciated
