Electricians - relay puzzle

User

I just finished installing an overhead misting system to help keep things cooler on the hottest days of the summer. I set the system up so that the mist comes on for several seconds every hour on the 24VAC signal from my misting controller. Because I only want overhead mist when it's really hot, I also have the system on the climate controller (thermostat), also a 24VAC signal. Using a 24V relay, the system mists when temps exceed 95 degrees (variable using the climate controller) for 10 seconds every hour (variable using the misting controller).

Here is the puzzle: when I hook the relay coil up to the misting controller and control the water valve with the climate controller signal, it works. When I hook up the relay coil to the climate controller and control the valve with the misting controler signal, it doesn't work. The valve makes a click at the right time but it doesn't open.

What's up?
