Comments (18)Morz, Thank-you for the info...I did not know that! I always have images of sweet smelling vines when I think of honeysuckle! Esh: What I've read this morning says that the Japanese version is a fairly new invasion....seems so new that it's not even listed as being found in VA (gov't database). They say it's hard to distinguish from the native one...I thought the leaf shape was different from A. spinosa and looked more like pics of A. elata that I saw on the web but maybe I'm wrong? Does A. spinosa grow 5ft in a yr? These things were not here last yr but there are suddenly 5 of them roughly 4-6 ft tall...sounds invasive. If you think I'm wrong please let me know!...See MoreMore snow pictures
Comments (5)Glad you liked the pics. Mary, I planted the Pseudopanax ferox in 2006. I planted P. crassifolius nearby at the same time but it croaked in the sort-of-bad winter of 2006-07. So ferox wins. I hope it gets big and if it dies I like your idea. I just did 50+ cuttings of that Podocarpus salignus so there will be plenty of those available later if I don't kill them all. (I think I brought a couple to Fronderosa) I originally got it from Colvos Creek. It's surprising how readily cuttings on that assume apical dominance. Lagarostrobos franklinii has been there for years... very slow. But cool. It's also easy from cuttings.... I think I did about 25 cuttings of it. I don't know what happened to the elk; maybe they all swam to Hawaii to look for food. I haven't seen them yet this year at all. Cascadians, the only real loss is the Cupressus. With so many trees I expect a couple major losses like that every year.... last year it was that Pinus patula. Everything else can be fixed. No need to freak out, just be patient! PS. don't stake your trees too tightly - I think it's better to use rope to secure them or else prop them up with a hefty branch. Most eucs are inclined to lean and there's usually no point in trying to stop them....See MoreSHRUBS - favorite deciduous z.5 -hardy
Comments (23)Oops sorry my intent was not to confuse or to incite "wonton lust" it was just pure ignorance. Mindy its good that you brought this up because I think I added the same frustration and confusion to the plant swap. Think I am going to move on to Mid Atlantic.just a square peg. Katy Mindy, Answering this one is like choosing which one of my three daughters is my favorite, which like every good parent I say is impossible. Then again if I had to chose right now as of this moment it is my oldest who is coming home next weekend for a non stop marathon in Excell instruction in the hopes that I will be able to combine records from junk drawers, sweat shirt pockets, ect. and put together a concise record and maintenance plan for the yard that extends beyond the present "Oh you mean the big bush in the front yard." Oops once again I digress here is my list of favorite shrubs as of November 6 at 10:00am. 1. Myrica pensylvanica I have fallen for the quiet elegance of this plant Zone (2) 3 to 6 suspect to 8 2. Comments (45)BTW, here is another interesting Latin naming issue, although there appears to be an explanation for it (?) Anyway, according to the ACS database: 1. Pinus sylvestris 'Glauca Nana' http://conifersociety.org/conifers/conifer/pinus/sylvestris/glauca-nana/ is a different plant from (note that the two words in the cultivar name are transposed) 2. Pinus sylvestris 'Nana Glauca' http://conifersociety.org/conifers/conifer/pinus/sylvestris/nana-glauca/ Although, in this case, the naming of plant 2 appears to have been necessitated to differentiate it from yet another different plant 3. Pinus sylvestris 'Nana' http://conifersociety.org/conifers/conifer/pinus/sylvestris/nana/ When plant hunting, make sure whether it is plant 1 or plant 2 that you are bringing home. Plant 1 is hardy to USDA zone 3, whereas plant 2 is hardy to USDA zone 5. It is all according to the ACS database, I am innocent :-)...See MoreViburnumValley central KY Bluegrass z6
