I grow the older version purple oxalis in the ground in part sun and have done so for many years in 100+ degree heat and humidity. They can take quite a bit of sun much more than I would have suspected. I am also growing some in pots for the first time but will probably transplant them into the ground later this summer. When I first got mine what I read was that they liked part sun but if you planted them in a place that recieved more sun than they were accustomed to they would lose their leaves but grow them back and the new leaves could tolerate more sun. I suspect they are not recieving enough light and or the hanging basket is getting too dry they are notorius for that. They are also easy to divide just dig out a clump and put in another pot. Just chiming in to this 7 year old thread to say that I bought a plant called "Oxalis Triangularis" on Etsy last month that fits exactly this description. It came in purple and green varieties. I was curious if the red/purple undersides were a sign of stress or just part of the plant, which is how I arrived here. There is very, very little information about the green version of this plant and I was so happy to learn more.

Hi Mark431, I've been growing this Oxalis for many years and though I get tons of flowers I have never seen a seed pod on my plant, nor had it come up in a neighboring pot. I've only propagated it by cuttings - it roots very easily. Sorry I've never tried root cuttings either. I find that my plant tends to droop down and develop a cascading form when it get too tall so cutting back keeps a nice form. Same with my Oxalis gigantea & O. penduncularis - they root quick and easy as stem cuttings. I haven't seen seed on either of them. I noticed that my O. gigantea cuttings will sometimes stay leafless and dormant for quite awhile before they come back to life - as long as a year. Alica

Lori, no offense taken... read below and you'll see why I think zone 5 (and that is only a "maybe"). In earlier posts I quite clearly said I have not tried to winter crassipes. I don't like it as it is just plain green... LOL Iron Cross O. Deppei foliage is much more attractive. If you don't have any in your garden I recommend Iron Cross as an annual ground cover. I have seen Pink Sorrel O. crassipes locally in other gardens here... I looked on several different websites (plant databases and googled it not just once) but you are absolutely right about the zones, thats why I started the other thread... I expect that they can likely make zone 5 not just because of the websites but because of the mass amounts of bulblets these little guys put out in a year. My experience with O.deppei and my familiarity with crassipes locally leads me to believe it won't winter in zone 4, I said "maybe zone 5". After winter is over here both deppei and crassipes bulbets turn to mush if they haven't completely gone rotten or become compost. I had too many O. deppei last year and this year I grew quite a few (but not too many, I know better now) LOL All the bulblets I left in the ground last year were mush. We had lots of snow this last year so it wasn't like they weren't protected. One of my relatives has a mixture of deppei (I gave him) and crassipes (same problem, mush). The bulblets all form about a half an inch below the surface and don't even take the first frost too well. I'm actually hoping to see more posts in the Zone-Pushing thread... I was surprised when a miniture rose made it through the winter and I'm hoping others will be surprised when they see what the rest of this group gets away with every year :-) I've tried a lot of new things this year in my garden... and leaving plants in the ground is one of the easiest new things I'm attempting this year LOL - Andrew
