Name That Plant!

Mysterious rooted cutting from flower arrangement

Hi, my grandmother got a flower arrangement from her church when she broke her ankle. They stayed there for a while with no water change or anything and all of them turned black except this one so I was like, "Oh, that's neat!" and I took it home with me. It's been kind of abused already and the roots were blackish when I planted it so I doused them in rooting hormone, potted it and hoped for the best. The leaves still look fine so time will tell. What in the world is this? It looks like some kind of woody shrub but I don't know.

It looks very similar. It looks like the Variegata cultivar. The only thing throwing me off is the toothed edge. It looks like some of them have it and some of them don't. What a confusing plant. Thanks for your quick answer.

thanks the bottom one is in the garden, sorry I didn't make that one clear ;^D pot ghettos interspersed in the garden doesn't help ID ing this one is too large a bloom and too smelly for Dorothy Perkins (rofl) I just hacked back a jungle of it at my other house thank you for giving me more info, though...if it's a oncebloomer it may be my only shot

Wisteria Cuttings Rooted - Will it Flower?

A rooted cutting from a mature, blooming plant should flower quickly. You sometimes see wisterias labelled as 'guaranteed to bloom' - those ones were rooted or grafted (grafted more common...) cuttings from mature, blooming plants. But the main thing you need to do to generate bloom relatively quickly is to prune, prune, prune! And never let root suckers - or suckers from below a graft union - grow because those ones are likely to be from the inferior root stock and may take forever to bloom if they do at all. My Chinese wisteria was a grafted plant. It took five years to produce a spring show but it produced the lesser summer flowers from the first year on. My Japanese one (which appears to be a rooted cutting) was planted in August 2007 and this is the first spring to bloom - the flower racemes are just expanding now. It doesn't have the secondary summer flowers that are fairly common for Chinese ones. Your best be is to look for a grafted plant in a nursery/garden center. The graft union is farly visible at the base of the stem. Look for one where the tag says 'guaranteed to bloom'. And then keep the vine well pruned - I would never grow them as a vine - both of mine are grown in tree/shrub form which makes them easy to control and promotes development of flowering wood.

Congrats. Have you been able to confirm if it has rooted. I assume it has. Really up to you if you remove the flowers. If its rooted I would enjoy the smell for a day or two then take them off. Meyers tend to try their hardest to keep flowering so it may just keep trying. Best way on bigger trees is to let it set the fruit then remove them. Mike

The second part of the photo problem is my computer illiteracy -- I don't know how to insert a photo. I'm from the 'olde dayes' of typewriters, liquid daub-on typo correction fluid, and carbon paper. *blush* I don't think the flowers were from the bank, because only one lady had them. But I have to go to the P.O. tomorrow, and the bank is on the way, so maybe I will just have to stop and ask her, and then call the florist. After all the looking I've been doing at 'bell-like' flowers, I'm beginning to think that I don't remember it correctly.

Aucuba japonica Variegata cultivar. Toothed edges are normal.

Yep, I just noticed. First I looked it up and Wikipedia and they looked smooth there, but then I saw pictures on Dave's Garden and they were all toothed. Thanks guys!

I don't know what your climate is like but it could well be hardy in your zone.

It's true that Aucuba may be cold hardy for cheeky, flora, but it makes a very good indoor plant. It should be used for that purpose more than it is.

Cheeky, what is your general location? I live in a zone 7 climate; Aucuba (plain green and the variegated cultivars) do very well here in the landscape if you are interested in a pretty shrub for dappled or light shade. If not, enjoy it in a bright location in your home.

I live in zone 7, but in an apartment. I can't decide if I like it enough to keep it as a houseplant but I'll see if it grows on me (horrible pun intended). If not I'll see if my mom wants it and if not I guess I could try to trade if for something else if anybody else wanted it or I guess I could give it away. Man, I feel bad talking about it behind it's back like this. It's like it's right over there staring at me like, "Don't do it man." But I'll see if it makes it and starts putting on roots before I speculate too much.
