I would wash them down more, over & over, and also water everything a LOT, as it is now in the soil. Wishing you good luck -

It has to dry to work, so you might be okay. Keep washing.

I think they say an hour or two of absorption time before a rain provides full killing power. Roses are so susceptible, I'm sure there will be damage, but I'd guess they will survive and eventually recover, maybe in a year.

You've got about 20 minutes before the damage gets going. Within an hour they're toast. If you sprayed off quickly, should be okay, maybe some misshapen leaves.

Another thought - DO NOT fertilize the roses that got sprayed. My understanding is that Round Up causes some sort of uber-growth - so much that it kills the plant. Just water, for months, until they start producing normal looking growth.

Depending on how heavily you sprayed the roses and how much washed off, I doubt you will outright kill any bushes. You will probably lose some foliage. RU works better in high heat, so if it wasn't that hot out, you may be in luck.

It's been cold so their 'juices' aren't that active.

IF they are roses that have been in the ground for several years (and have that sort of size), if I were you, I'd cut the canes off and let the roots push replacements.

I've been in my garden this week and the growth slowdown has been remarkable- it's as if they stopped when the temps dropped so steeply.

(Calgon has a high dispersant within it and might make for better rinse off....we used to use a chemical version of it to break up clays, even clays with complex hydrocarbons.)

If you hosed everything down with water straight away like you said you did, the damage should be minimal.

But you say that everyone at Rogue Valley sounded stoned? Not good news. I have a pending order there . . .

Thank you all. I didn't spray any of them hard with the R-up, just a misty squirt or two. I got all of them washed down w/i 20 minutes, then did a 2nd more thorough wash. After I called RVR back, I washed them all down once more. I also called Round-up, just in case a neutralizer exists--it doesn't. 30 minutes is stretching the outside time--as professorrausch said, after 20 minutes it's a lost cause. I was using Round-up For Poison Ivy (since it was supposed to be for Multiflora), but that makes it worse as it has two killers instead of just one. So I am expecting some death and damage, but will let you all know how bad just in case someone else does something this stupid.

You may be ok - but roundup is a chelating agent that affects the roots not the foliage directly. If you got it off the leaves in time you may dodge a bullet. It doesn't trigger rapid growth, that is a different type of chemical, a hormone based one that basically exhausts the plant to death. Roundup kills roots. If your roses stop growing then go yellow they are dead and won't recover, if they don't they are fine. You will know in about 7 days!!

You are actually not the first person on this forum to do exactly this. Do you remember our beloved Texan gardener Cindi? She had a very bad year one year. One of the bad events was when she accidentally sprayed her roses with RoundUp thinking it was fungicide. I don't think she ever forgave herself that error. She pretty much gave up growing one of the prettiest rose gardens you can imagine. (The hurricane that ripped up the remnants didn't help much either.) Anyway, even if your roses do not recover, don't you give up on growing roses because of it!

Oh, how I do miss Cindi on the rose forums. She could spin a web of words into an enchanted castle and make you think you could see it!

oh dear, Catsrose - been there myself and yep, you do have some time before the round-up works and once it hits the soil, it goes inert. There are a few things in your favour though, as most people have mentioned and you acted quickly in hosing them down. Caldonbeck is quite correct to state that it acts on the roots so as long as it did not sit on the foliage long enough to soak into the vascular system, you do have a good chance to save these roses. And yes, it does not cause rapid growth - that is hormone based broad leaf herbicides such as 2,4.D.

I am no expert...I just wanted to say how sorry I am and that I hope for some good luck for your roses. I have done similar mindless things myself, and I know how upset with myself I get. Don`t beat yourself up...things happen. You were quick to wash...so I have hope for your roses. Keep us updated. Lesley

My Round-Up sprayer has "ROUND UP" written on it TWICE in BIG letters, because I have almost done this on more than one occasion. So does the plastic measuring cup, so I don't accidently use it for something else.

You've reminded me that I should go out and check the multiflora I murdered last fall to make sure that it doesn't need another spritz to finish it off.

Catsrose, I have a helper who sprayed five of my roses with R-up when he was supposed to be spraying weeds in the driveway. I caught him in the act, and instantly turned on the overhead sprinkler system, plus we had a hard rain that afternoon. I also ran the sprinklers the next day. The only two that survived were Rosette Delizzy and Clair Matin. However, he was spraying with a pump-up sprayer and the roses were completely drenched with the spray. I'm crossing my fingers for you and your roses.

Yes, all-too-common a mistake. You're not the first or the last.

Roundup is a systemic herbicide. It is absorbed by the leaves and travels throughout the plant to kill the tops and the roots. You have very little time to wash it off before it gets absorbed. I don't know how much but the 20 minutes cited above sounds reasonable.

Roundup does not itself cause rapid growth but it works faster and more thoroughly when growth is rapid. We sometimes add miracle gro to our roundup mix to enhance its effectiveness. So - as mentioned above: do NOT fertilize your sprayed roses!!!

The advice to prune off sprayed branches is good too but it would have had to been done right away, before the roundup traveled to the roots.

Roundup is not active in the soil at all. Don't worry about that part.

I looked up Roundup for Poison Ivy and it also contains triclopyr, the active ingredient in Garlon and Blackberry n Brush killer. This is also systemic and is a powerful woody brush killer. I think I'd be more worried about that than the roundup. I use a lot of Garlon at work to kill invasive shrubs, and in spring when things are actively growing, the rinsate from the empty sprayer can still kill things. That means that when I'm done spraying, I rinse the empty sprayer with plain water and spray it out on more of the target brush and sometimes that's enough to kill them.

A note to all about pesticide safety: always always always keep separate sprayers and measuring implements for herbicides versus everything else.

H.Kuska comment. In well fertilized soils it can be picked up by the roots of nearby plants.

Catsrose, why not order a few more rose -- just in case. I use Round Up at the most dilute setting.

If you have some roses waiting, maybe they will all live. But if not, you will have to wait a year or plant at a time when they won't have a real good chance of living.

If you order them now, they will develop some roots that may make it through the winter. ( I am talking about my climate, but yours may be similar.)

I've been there -- done that. I am really sorry.
