Craftsman tracked snow blower owners maanuals?

A few years back, Craftsman/Sears sold a tracked snow blower/ thrower! A friend bought one, used, from the original owner, who said he couldn't find the booklets that came with it! (Probably used the pages to light the furnace!)

Now, my friend called and asked if those booklets or instructions could be found, thru Sears Parts Direct, or otherwise.

He called and gave me the numbers off the machine, but they don't compute in Sears Parts Direct. Here's what he sent to me:

M536-8854-7000 (Not sure if they are the right numbers)

Code: 4165-02609

Any body have an idea of how to get the manuals? I tried typing them into the Parts Direct web-site, but nothing works. And, the snow here is getting deeper, as i write, and he's getting antsy! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Rusty, Here's all I could come up with. It appears the actual model number doesn't use the M on the model number . I found a listing for one under 536885471.(no dashes) Apparently parts direct is closed right now. Sounds like you and your friend need to figure out how to work that thing without a manual.

536885471 is a valid model number for the tracked machine.

A friend has a Craftsman snow blower/thrower that is in its eigth season. He plows out the street in front of his place, and down to the main road. (He owns that part of his street!) Sounds crazy, i know, but thats the way it is. He took his machine in for its annual service, as defined in the service manual, and which he paid extra for. Sears called and told him this would be his last time on that service and it could not be renewed on that machine! And, they would not sell another service contract on it---period! So, they called and told him it was ready, and he picked it up and took it home. Friday was the first time he needed to use it, so he started it up. Then he found one wheel pin was gonzo! Not having a spare, he had to rassle the machine thru the whole evenings work, it always pulled to the right. Then he found that the big impeller that throws the snow out the chute, was wobbling and not turning like it should. He found the lock bolt that holds it tight to the shaft, was ready to fall out! Now, what does that tell you about Sears, and their service contracts? I have always considered them to be a rip-off, on anything mechanical! And, what do they hire to do the service work, on lawn and garden and snow equipment? I have seen some of their "hires" sitting around at lunch-time, and most of them look so dumb, they couldn't pour pixx out of a boot, if the directions were printed on the heel! I told my friend that i'll do any maintenance work, or repairs, next time! And, it'll be done right--not sloppy!

As a long time Honda user/owner of all sorts of products, I think your choice is an excellent one. There is no question that Ariens and Simplicity also make excellent products and that you should look at those IF they are supported in your area. However, the hydrostatic drive plus the tracks makes the Honda an amazing machine to operate. Yep, tracked machines can be slightly more difficult to turn but wheeled machines are no treat either. I prefer the gripping power of the tracks because they make the unit nearly unstoppable. As for design and throwing ability, Honda knows what they are doing. It snows in Japan, just like it snows in North America. I bought one of the first tracked snowblowers that Honda made and gave it to my father as a present back in the mid-eighties. He loved the machine. It started with one pull every single time. It was only 5.5 hp but that unit threw snow better than the ten hp American made models his neighbours owned. When he moved to a retirement home in 1995, I sold that blower to some friends of mine and they are still using it today. My second choice would be the Ariens but if cost is no object, then I would definitely choose the Honda.

I just worked on a brand new Sears blower with a "Craftsman" 208 cc engine. I guess Briggs didn't want to put their name on it. The owner thought it was too much trouble to go through their warranty service and asked me to fix it instead. From new, it was very difficult to start. The carb had some matter inside and when it did start, the choke had to be left partially ON for it to run without a miss. Removed, cleaned, and blew out all the passageways. Runs well now. Found that if you prime and choke as the manual suggests, it will flood. Choke only, was the best way. Everything about the engine and unit, built by MTD, seems mediocre quality, even though it appears to be a high priced unit. My initial opinion of this Chinese wonder....if it doesn't start, replace the engine.

I have a long paved driveway on a slope. I am using a Craftsman (MTD) 928 two-stage snowblower, but have added a Clarence impeller kit to get decent performance out of it. Given past experience, this is what I would recommend given your situation and budget ($5k) and assuming your driveway is paved: Two snowblowers! You need a good two-stage for snows greater than 6 inches. Good brands are Ariens, Simplicity and Honda. Honda can't be beat, but they are expensive! Maybe go for a smaller tracked model. If you get a wheeled model, look for one that releases either wheel with finger triggers, that makes it much easier to handle. You need a good single-stage for snows less than 6 inches. Why? If your driveway is paved, then you know that even a small amount of snow left behind can turn to ice after driving over it once or twice - bad news on a slope! A single-stage will clean the snow down to the pavement and eliminate that problem. Use it for light snowfalls, and use it for clean-up after using the two-stage on larger snowfalls. The single-stage is also lighter and easier to handle. For a brand, I'd have to recommend a Toro 221Q (2-stroke) or 421Q (4-stroke) with the 221 being a little better than the 421. Toro beats even Honda in this market.

A note to all who helped: Tomorrow, i will call Parts Direct and order the manual for the guy. From the pics, it looks exactly like his machine.

Oh, in case you need some snow to plow, I'd be happy to send ya some of mine! My neighbors took pity on this old Geezer, and they shovelled the front of the driveway, the front walk, and the porch! I went out and cleaned off the car and truck today.
When we moved in this house, back in 1950, after our honeymoon, about three weeks later came a deep snow, and that had us stuck in our house for almost a week! My bride had lived in Pittsburgh, PA., in the city area. If she could of gotten out of here, she would have called the whole thing off, and gone back to her Mother. But, after a large, double bull-dozer finally opened the main roads, we did get out to the grocery store about 5 miles away.
Oh, what was the double bull-dozer? Two massive tracked dozers welded side by side, and they cleared the back roads of everything, including stuck cars and all! And, mail boxes!

Rusty - you don't need to spend the money to buy one.. unless you just need/want to.
Otherwise go back up to my earlier post in this thread, click on the link, download the manual to yer puter and use as is or print it out :) HTH.

I wanted to do that, but when my wife heard about me wanting to print it out--all of the snow suddenly blew right off of the roof!
So, i did the next best thing---i took all of the info over to my friend, and left it at his house with his wife, as he was at work. So, he can call and get the booklets.
We are supposed to get more snow dumped on us tomorrow or next day. Wife is all worried, but there isn't anything we can do to stop it, so why worry?! Out here in the suburbs, our streets and roads, highways, interstates are all clear and dry! Can't say that for the city. It looks like a disaster area. Their excuse is they have to plow the main roads and streets downtown, so folks can get to work! But, they don't plow out any streets and roads where the workers live! Why, they even found about twenty streets that aren't even on any city maps! Folks live there, but can't get out or in!
