inherited compost pile question

Hello, new member here with a (maybe stupid) question. I recently moved into a house that has a very large and very aged compost pile. I'd estimate that it's been sitting there for at least 2-3 years and most of the matter is quite broken down. The compost looks like it was mostly grass clippings and tree/brush trimmings, and there was a lot of garbage, plastic, glass, etc. in the pile which I meticulously picked out while I was digging through it all. I also found a layer of what appears to be kitty litter. No sign of any animal waste, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Is it safe to use any of this compost or should I just trash it? Seeing as how I don't really know exactly what's in there I guess it'd be smart to not use it but it seems like such a waste to throw it out. Any insights would be appreciated! Thanks.
