Anyone growing florist roses?

Last summer, my sister's husband had given her a dozen of these yellow cut roses, she passed them around to family members and I went home and budded it onto to a rootstock Â the blooms are now even nicer than I recall! With being in a cold zone, IÂm going to keep this one potted and am hoping it proves to give a decent quantity of these awesome blooms. It has very thick substance and glossy shiny foliage and rather looks like it might have some Kordes blood within. Maybe, someone might even know the name of this rose? How many of you have also done so and being happy with the plant obtained? I know it's not legal to progagate such a patented plant for sale, but just gonna keep it for myself, so hope the plant police won't come knockin at my door ...

Nice. Wish I knew how to do that. Since you seem to do a bit of rose breeding, please see if you can create some of those beautiful HT's hardy to zone 2. LOL.

Yes, it can work. I've read reports on other forums of people who have done it. Personally, I don't have interest in it because traditionally, florist varieties are selected for under glass performance and quite often, not ALL the time, but often don't make good garden plants. They usually aren't selected for cold or heat tolerance nor disease resistance. Very often, florist varieties are regularly sprayed for insects and disease, so inherent abilities to fight them off or tolerate them are often lacking. But, as long as the seed parent selected is genetically compatible, the cut flower pollen is fresh enough and it's done correctly, there are few reasons why it wouldn't work. Kim

I read somewhere that the creamy white sport of Souvenir de la Malmaison, called Kronprinzessin Viktoria, is aparently either resistant to thrips damage or they aren't attracted to it in the first place. Anyway, I was tempted to get it because of that, it's nice compact growth habit and floriferousness; plus Chamblees sells it and I like to support them. But It's got that old-fashioned muddled center of many little petals. I'm really partial to that hybrid tea look and usually don't like more than 50 petals or so in a bloom. Call me shallow. Anyway, still wondering about whites. I am tempted by Pope John Paul II because folks rave about the beauty and fragrance and general health, but it too would require diligent bud spraying to prevent thrips damage. Anyone here have an opinion about that? What about White Lightnin' or Tineke, or the pure white sport of Cajun Moon I just saw called Miss Kitty. Anyone know how big these get and how they do in the South?

I impulsively bought single stem rose about four hours ago, since basically every store is selling them for Valentine's Day, in hopes of letting it grow into a rose bush. It has many, many leaves so I'm hoping photosynthesis won't be too hard a task. I've been reading on this website and other sites, and watching plenty of videos of how to proceed in growing this single stem into a bush. Right now, I put it in a cup of water with a little bit of sugar--my mother was washing some cut spinach earlier so I have a little bit of that water in here as well. I shredded the end of the rose a little and sprayed the plant with some water. Other than that, I haven't done anything to the plant. Other than stare at it. And talk to it. And play it a video or two; plants like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, right? Anyway, I was hoping I could please, please get some advice! I read up on putting in soil with a little bit of root hormone (though I hear honey works well, too; if I need to put it in soil, I'll be using honey since I have that at home). However, I also read one can grow it in water, so I'm wondering which method is best. I haven't cut the flower yet. It's not a bud, but a nice size flower that's very aromatic! I posted a picture of it--yes, it was bad of me to take it out of the water, but I'm hoping seeing it will help determine if I need to cut off leaves at the bottom or whether the amount of step I have is alright since there are nodes available for rooting. Apparently I have 5 De Ruiter roses. DIORAMA, ESPERANCE, KIMONO, ROSALYN CARTER and SWEET UNIQUE. Two of those are florist roses, and I know they have quite a few florist roses. DIORAMA is a lovely rose I got many yrs ago from Vintage Gardens. Hasn't bloomed a whole lot in recent yrs. But I haven't gotten the bed it's in cleaned out in awhile. Hopefully I haven't lost it! ESPERANCE is one of the florist roses. Got it from Carlton's yrs ago. It's lovely, very-long lasting rose. Got KIMONO from Cliff before he opened up EuroDesert Roses. It's been an "ok" rose. Not really very exciting. ROSALYNN CARTER (aka PRINS CLAUS) is one I got many yrs ago from Hortico. She's a lovely rose. I need to get her in the ground. Been in a pot for over 10yrs. SWEET UNIQUE is the other florist rose, also from Carltons. Been a decent rose, but doesn't repeat as well as I'd like. The blooms are pretty tho.

Yes, I do this all the time, and am teaching this next month to a local rose society. Yours might be Konfetti, but that is just a guess. I always know what rose I am attempting to propagate, and whether or not it is patented. Last year I sent some trial results on florist roses not available otherwise to some companies in Europe, and for the most part got positive feedback in return. Check out this link to see Latin Lady in various bloom stages. De Ruiter (breeder) keeps explaining to me that it will not last outside, but it is already budding up, and fared better than some of my others.

By the way, if it is Konfetti you're safe as it is not patented, at least here in the U.S.

absolutely gorgeous rose...probably no smell though. That is my next step in roses. I want to learn to propagate. I wish you were nearby Mike!

A lot of rose people around here are interested in exhibiting only. Not my cup of tea.

I grow a lot of florist roses, but most are from the old Carlton's Roses. They used to sell florist rose plants, but they went out of business a couple yrs ago.

I think Mike might be right. Your rose looks a good bit like KONFETTI, altho it does get more red on the edges. But the form is very close. I recently tried to root cuttings from a couple of florist roses. One did root, but it hasn't done anything. Another one looks like it might've rooted. I should try to bud them too. Looks like it would be fun to do. Safeway has a great selection of florist roses and they always have the names on the cellophane.

The best florist rose to come around in a long time is RED INTUITION. Supposedly it doesn't do well as a garden rose in Europe, but it's wonderful in my garden!

YES, I agree this one does rather resemble Konfetti ... and I think in summer it'll show more of that red.

"absolutely gorgeous rose...probably no smell though" ... indeed there is very little fragrance to this one, but the form and color sure do tickle the eye!

Joan, I'll likely incorporate this one into my breeding program, though it'll be a long drawn out task acquiring hardiness from the seedlings of a tender variety, so lots future crosses will need to be done!

Everyone should give budding a try, it's really not at all difficult, especially chip budding!

Mgleason your Latin lady is gorgeous and reminds me of Alleluia that I had grafted on fortuniana. The blooms were absolutely stunning but it wasn't vigorous, cankered all the time and finally passed away during last year's drought.

I found what I think is a florist rose yesterday at a produce stand that always has nice roses. It is a mauve tagged La Vanda. I was hoping it would be Lavonde.....a mauve Sequoia was out of. They had 3, but one of the plants looked scrawny, so I bought the 2 nice ones. Anyone have any information on this one? They are budded up and I will get them in the ground tomorrow and am hoping I found a prize!

rooting florist roses during the winter helps satisfy my rose fix. I also find out the variety of the rose when I buy it. However, if it is rose from a funeral, I name it after that person.

Thanks all for the comments on Latin Lady. Hard to believe De Ruiters is being so obtuse about this as a garden rose.

I have a few others that also seem to be good garden roses on their own roots and also easy to root;
Cherry Brandy (orange HT)
Skyline (yellow HT)
Escimo (white FL)
Frisco (yellow FL)

I'm pretty excited about Frisco since it seems to throw so many sports. Black Beauty, Hocus Pocus, Amore and Abracadabra all are sports of Frisco.

Do you entertain special requests for rooting the roses you have? I would like to have cherry brandy and a couple more you have.I have ordered from hortico for the first time and barkarole,the main reason for ordering from them never broke dormancy and died on me.I would like to have a few roses only available at hortico from other sources,if possible.Do you have Blue chip?
