Tree-ish? Houseplant-ish?

I got this plant from work a few years ago. It originally came in a four-inch pot as a "free gift" from one of our vendors, but it was terribly unhappy after too much time in an office with no windows. It was basically two skinny sticks with a few leaves up at the top. It looked so awful that my boss said throw it out, but I felt sorry for it, took it home, and cut it into sections that I rooted and put in the pot with the original plant. I know it likes light but not blazing sun because it goes outside in summer and I tried it in full sun the year before last (it wasn't happy), its new leaves come in red or pink when it is happy (we just moved to a new house and it's got a big south window now) and it's got a woody stem, so tree-ish/shrub-ish, but I don't have a clue what it is. It can't be anything rare because I'm sure our vendor bought thousands of them to send to customers, but I've searched off and on over the years, and haven't found it.
