It's a great specimen rose when it's this size. I really like the decoration hanging on your door. Lovely house, what I can see of it.

That she does! Now, add a lot of purple around her and watch her pop! There is a Salvia Anthony Parker behind her with Ebb Tide to her left with the Verbena bonarensis throwing itself throughout the border. Farther down to the left are Midnight Blue, Honey Bouquet, Scent from Above on the wall with Buddleja lochinch (lavender), various lavenders, cat thyme, germander and seasonal yellow and purple annuals and bulbs. I wish those purple daisies were perennial here. I love them but have to pay too much to create a mass of them.

I gutted the front bed this year. Waiting on the nurseries to bring in the verbena...I love it with this rose too!!

Oh, yeah! Purple Verbena can be spectacular, too. Any of the purple Salvias you can squirrel in there will add to the "bouquet" feel if it. How do columbine do for you there? Some of the McKanna's Giants are quite dark purple and can look very good. Purple Gladiolus would add that "feather" look like the Salvias do. Asters, if they are vigorous there (they aren't here) can look great as well as blue Batchelor's Buttons. We have a Blue Flax that's part of the Wild Flower Mix available here in Southern California which could look great there with her. They reseed like mad and aren't quite as "persistent" as the Red Flax have proven to be. Those regenerate themselves everywhere each year. Purple Lupine would also look wonderful in that bed with Julia. Plain old blue Lobelia from bedding plant sources can make her explode, too. Kim

My goodness, roseseek, your yellow and purple descriptions reflect what I have tried to do with my front flower beds, only with slightly different flower selections. I have a wide front walk that ascends a slope, leading to the porch. Starting at the top near the porch is Ebb Tide, one on either side of the walk; then purple African daisies, followed by two magenta purplish Karl Rosenfeld peonies; then continuing down the slope are two Julias on either side of the walk; lower still are Jupiter's Beard, and then a small Bernstein-Rose on either side of the walk that are are smaller versions of Julia. The beds spread out at the base of the slope and are filled with yellow and purple coreopsis, yellow rudbeckia, purple coneflowers, campanula, and other perennials, along with more Bernsteins and some pink, white, and blue stuff for accents. Whew! Now if the coldest April in over 20 years would just end, maybe something would bloom! Diane

My Julia Child is just a year old, and I am anxious for it to grow.

Are you ordering Homestead Purple Verbena? Here it is perennial, and I love it with my roses. However, your rose is beautiful as a stand alone rose too.

She is absolutely stunning! May I ask how old she is (ie. how long does it take for Julie Child to mature so nicely)? Now that you've told us about the extention, how can you not show us!! Purple and Yellow are a wonderful combination.

If you're asking about the California Julia Child, the plant is two years old. She gets full morning sun against the garage wall at a client's house. Everything has been severely cut back to remove the Golden Celebration which grew behind them, or out grew them, grew OVER them. It was time to send it to the dump. A ton of plant for a few light flushes of flowers. The soil there is very light, sandy loam so all should grow like the weeds they are. Kim

Thats a TWO year old rose?! Ok, thank's for helping me decide on my yellow DA. I had also been thinking about Golden Celebration and the Pilgrim, but I think your picture has me sold, especially with me being in a similar climate with similar soil.

Harmonyp--Here in Idaho the climate is not as wonderful as Cal for roses, but my Julias also matured in about two years. A few feet away, I have a Golden Celebration which took at least a year longer to mature. Most Austins here take about three years to really kick in,in fact. GC is a lovely rose, though, but you'll have fast results from Julia. Diane

Ronda, what do you feed your Julia Child? I've had mine for a few years and she...well, she doesn't look like yours, let's put it that way!

Yup, she's a two year old, commercially propagated, retail purchased, canned, bud and bloom rose from the local family owned garden center. It isn't surprising the English roses take longer where you are to develop. Very many of them are, for all intents and purposes, climbers, and climbers take longer to mature. Even in the AARS trials, climbers were given an extra year for evaluation over traditional bushes. They are larger plants, requiring a larger root system to support all that top growth, and roots take a while to grow. All things being equal, a smaller bush rose will mature and perform faster than a climber or significantly larger bush.

Golden Celebration can be a gorgeous plant, given the appropriate room, resources, environment and time. It just didn't flower enough for the size the plant demanded in the spot it was planted. IMHO, it's a whale of a lot better garden rose than the Graham Thomas I inherited out in my front garden. It's well established and it flowers in regular flushes so I'm not climbing up into that terrace to rip it out. But, I won't plant another one.

I know they aren't the same everywhere, but in similar climates, the Tom Carruth roses from Week's are just wonderful. There are some glitches, such as Ebb Tide, which is beautiful but not as vigorous as the others. His roses are selected in this type of climate and, for the most part, are just great, beautiful garden plants here with very little fuss. I loved Sweet Surrender, but couldn't endure the mildew and rust any longer. His Memorial Day provided the perfect replacement with none of the issues. I'd grow Neptune in place of Barbra Streisand any day, and do everyday. Julia just works here, and she has FRAGRANCE! Kim

I have pretty good soil there from mulch being in that area for several years. I throw 10-10-10 under there in spring. Thats it. I don't spray and I don't water unless I have too. However!!! I have had this rose in several places and she did well for me everywhere (2 separate roses from 2 different vendors). I do bury her deep to encourage own-roots and basals.

What is crazy is that this rose blew completely over onto the porch...I could see the underside of every leaf.....but her roots stayed firmly in the ground. No idea what part of her flexed but nothing broke and not one root popped out of the earth.

Maybe that is the key. Dig her a deep hole filled with a scoop ot two of soil from one of your garden beds that has been mulched for years, sink her deep, back-fill with native soil and let her go!!
