This will be my 3rd season for Elaine. It hasn't bloomed since I bought it, though I did divide it immediately after purchase. Like tedevore said, I've heard the same thing about keeping them in a pot to encourage bloom -- they seem to like it for some reason. I'm considering digging mine, potting them then re-burying them in the bed. So far 'Elaine' has been hardy outdoors for me with just some pine chips or straw for mulch over the winter. However we haven't had any terribly cold winters for her yet. On the bright side, I bought 'Peter Pan' & 'Lilliput' last year, divided them and planted them just as I did Elaine. I just saw a stalk/scape on one of the 'Peter Pan' divisions today so maybe it isn't as finicky. Squirrellypete

I bought a large 'Elaine' Agapanthus and divided it into 4 plants. All four survived the winter in an open unprotected, unmulched full sun location. I realize this was a mild winter so I transplanted them to a more sheltered location in the spring and they have grown very well but no blooms this year. I have since been told that the roots like to be crowded and they will often bloom better if potted or even buried in the ground pot and all. I may dig a couple up, put them in a pot & re-bury them as an experiment for next year. This past weekend I purchased 'Peter Pan' & 'Lilliput' Agapanthus which I think are smaller varieties, so we'll see how they do and if they survive this coming winter. Squirrellypete

Same post as in another thread.... I have severe Zone-Denial-Disorder and also am quite stubborn and hard headed enough to try do things like growing agapanthus or other SA bulbs in tropics (miami, fla 10B) despite what many experts say. It is generally agreeed that agapanthus can be grown from zones 7 - 10 but that doesn't mean you can just stick them in the ground and have success. I really find the smaller plants do best. Mine are grown from seed and kept in very large plastic pots on northern side of house...that way I can move them into decorative pots on sides of front porch when they are in bloom then put them back where they want to be! They get several hours of light both in morning and afternoon - shaded in mid day. You can duplicate under a small tree, I guess. I water them only once/day, every morning around 5:00 am, they have an inch of pearock at bottom of pot and a 50/50 mix of potting soil sand and I don't fertilize until after they finish blooming. And yes, they are just now getting ready to bloom again - just starting to show the tips... hopefully will take a pic to post for everyone to see next week. Wish I had as much success with clivia! lol!
