Name That Plant!

unknown plant from the Netherlands

Hi,

I am Gerd Knoche from Germany. I attach a pic from a plant which looks like a member of Cucurbitaceae - although there are some doubts. It was found in the Netherlands growing in a field with Dahlias.

The most strange thing is a well developed tuber.

Any guesses?

Maybe Bryonia dioca.

We were removing invasives as part of a workday and someone got a little too carried away; we pulled this out of the pile when it caught our attention as different looking. The roots are still firmly in the ground .... Alas, this place was infested with microstegium and there was even kudzu well inside the natural area! On the plus side, the park was full of people! It was delightful to see so many people enjoying the great outdoors and the benefits of our tax dollars.

Thank you Susan,
Maybe it is this species, although the winged leafstalks
did not fit. Are there related Bryonia species?

Sorry, got a hint and answer my own question:

It is Polymnia sonchifolia (P. edulis)
Nevertheless, thank you for your efforts.

I grew Yacon this year. The tubers are quite tasty. Mildly sweet with a nice crunchy texture. The large tubers are eaten and the little reddish ones are planted for the next year's crop. The tubers become sweeter after they've been stored for a while. Just out of the ground they are pretty tasteless.
