Bird's nest inside my zipper greenhouse!

I just went outside to check on my Vintage Gardens bands inside the zipper greenhouses on my front porch, and inside a 1g pot of Deja Bleu, there is a bird's nest! It kind of surprised me because I just put that greenhouse up last weekend. The bird had even used some of the packing matierial from Bluestone Perennials order that I hadn't finished cleaning up yet (shredded newspaper, & some moss I had used as mulch to over winter some of my gallon pots...etc). I moved the other plants off the top shelf and left this one alone, but now what??? I need to water the other plants, but I don't want to disturb the nest. I checked and there's no eggs yet, but it looks like the nest is almost done....any suggestions???

It's in the one on the left. I guess it preferred the shaded Tractor Supply greenhouse to the Lowe's clear one...

Since there are no eggs yet I'd go ahead and get it out of there. Otherwise you won't be able to tend to that Deja Blue plant for months and it will die. Take it out and keep the cover zipped for a while and the bird should pick a new place to nest. Don't worry about the bird. Nests get disturbed and they have to start over all the time in nature. But doing it now before the eggs are laid is best.

I feel terrible taking it out! but you're right, Deja Bleu doesn't stand a chance without me being able to water it. I dont want to zip the greenhouses shut because its already getting into the 80's here, but I think I may put some bird netting over them to prevent them from nesting again. ...and by the way, I have around 5 actual birdhouses in my front yard and I think there's still some vacancies! Maybe whatever it is will just relocate to one of them....

Unlike other birds, robins are extremely skilled worm hunters. After a robin couple built a nest in my backyard's apple tree this year, I wanted to move the nest to another yard, but I resisted, and so I watched the robins hunt and capture lots and lots of worms from my yard. Worm castings (pooh-pooh) is just about the best fertilizer there is, so I was sorry to see so many worms killed by the robin couple to feed their 2 young babies in the nest. Although I didn't remove the nest, I discouraged the robins from removing worms from my lawn whenever I saw them hunting, which I saw them doing all the time. I actually saved a few worms from the robins' mouths and hid the saved worms under soil in the veggie garden. You gotta hide the worms you save because the robin will return to the spot you stole the worm from him shortly after you leave the spot. I've never seen any other bird species that's as good at worm hunting than robins. I gotta wonder if they're the best? They seem to be the only bird species in my neighborhood to hunt worms. I've never seen any other bird around here capture a worm, which makes me think most of the other bird species don't hunt worms.

I'm still trying to get an answer as to why "non-native" birds are "trash", while humans get a free pass. Would anyone like to answer? As far as feeders go, the most signifant reason people have feeders in their yards, birders or non-birders, is for their own entertainment. I could care less how many different types of birds people "get to see" in their yards! Animals do not exist on this earth for the purpose of human entertainment. They are here for their own reasons. As far as rehabbing indivisual birds goes, I have rehabbed several birds who flew into my window and were knocked unconcsious. I do it to help out an animal that needs medical care, which I would do for any aniaml or person I saw injured, not because I want to preserve the existance of some taxonomical abstraction. Sorry but your words sound very callous and cold-hearted. You may not be specifically saying you want Starlings torutured, but your attitude towards them is what has spurned the latest craze I see in the conservation movement, which is this focus on the blaming and killing of other animals in the name of saving "native species" rather than habitiat preservation and drastically reduced consumption of resources. I don't believe it's the place of humans, the most non-native and destructive of them all, to determine which animals live and which ones die, while we do everything to ensure the life of every human is as long and pain-free as possible. It's just plain hypocritical and unethical.

I have the same problem in Florida with my orchids. They hang in various baskets under the trees. Not only do the birds try to nest in the baskets, they love the sphagnum moss which is part of the potting mix. They also love the coir baskets, pulling chunks off the baskets which leaves big holes where all the potting mix falls out. One thing I did last year which seemed to work was to add small lava rock to the top of the potting mix. They do not like it and have left the plants alone. I removed it after nesting season and saved it for this year. I found a bunch of house wrens and finches landing in the baskets this morning and I knew it was time to get the rock out. You could probably use small gravel. Would work the same. Good luck and let us know how it goes... Jane

Agree with Floral. First, what you describe is not a greenhouse even though the manufacturer calls them that. And given the many problems associated with using them, if possible you might wish to return it for a refund. The cold frame too as cold frames also have a big learning curve. That said, you can use then for starting seeds indoors but only IF you also provide the supplemental lighting needed. It is the light that is crucial to success if you don't have a sun room or actual greenhouse. In general, growing from seed can be expensive but it is a one time expense as the needed equipment is all reusable. Is it worth it? That all depends on exactly what you are trying to grow and what level of success vs. waste is acceptable to you. If only perennials is your primary goal and what you want are readily available perennials then no, buying transplants is much less expensive. If you also want lots of annuals (flowers or vegetables) or varieties that are unusual and difficult to find, then like for many of us, growing your own from seed is the only way to go. But it has upfront costs and takes time and research to learn how to do it. Read through all the FAQs on this forum first and then decide if it is something you want to undertake. some birds build several nests (wrens for example) selecting the best one out of the bunch for the eggs - I agree, move it now before it makes a decision which will impact on you and your rose.

Well, I removed it tonight. I think it may have belonged to a chickadee that was stalking me while I was cleaning it out (or maybe it was my guilty conscience).

Besides, we have bigger fish to fry. I was just outside on the front porch (again) and something is apparently living in the soffits above the porch. Whatever it was ran across the vinyl soffits and was heavy enough to actually make them move...so I'm thinking either a possum or raccoon. I don't think my rosie friends will be able to help me with this one :( Ugh....why do the animals mistake me for SnowWhite???

LOL...yep that's part of my pot ghetto on the floor in front of them :) There's also 2 more this size in the back, two 4x6 in the back, and one "real" greenhouse with actual panels and vents still boxed in my garage. That one is 8x12 I think. :)

That's the kind I have too, the clear one from Biglots. I got it cheap during the friends and family sale. I put my house roses straight into it, and it made their leafs a little burned at first even though I watched them carefully, but I think they are used to it now.
