A new record!!!
Comments (9)perhaps, we can discuss the finer points ;). i've been posting about my adventures last year in aroid forum, but it's ultra slow and hardly anybody posts there continuously. i've had mine since july 2009 - been doing quite well, even holding onto 2 leaves on each tuber thru winter, but then it went almost into dormancy - i thought i lost it, but luckily i found grab's post in aroids and that started me on a very lengthy project. i'll update it with more details (of which there are plenty as is already) - if you're interested. i also had problems of getting more then 2-3 leaves on a stalk, but last year i finally gave it much better growing conditions and was rewarded with 4-5 leaves. past winter the first time ever it held to the majority of it's leaves, dropping only 1-2 on a stalk. so i also have high hopes for this season :). so far i have 2-3 new leaves with a couple old still holding on each tuber. one has a branch: it's growing from 2 stalks. so my biggest is at 5 leaf count: 2 old 2 new and a new leaf opening. and i have another 6-8 weeks, so hoping for more to come. the thick cluster on the left is 3 tubers: 1 3yr old sprout, 1 branched and one single. the one on the right is the strongest 5 leafer. Comments (15)Tee-hee! I wrote the 87 eggs on a vine (instead of 89, in case anyone noticed) because I was thinking of how I am taking them OFF the vine...) Murray, those PVS mamas are sure funny. Humminbird mamas, I'm finding out, are also interesting characters. I found a nest the other day while I was out hand-watering the garden.I thought this hummingbird was drinking the water I was spraying (I do think she was) when I realized that she was SITTING on a nest! The nest was built on a Passiflora vine next to the Mexican Flame Vine. She is now used to me and not so freaked out when I come by....See MoreNew record for distance traveled
Comments (2)They are thinking it did not go to Mexico at all but headed east on the way down. Stayed the winter then headed back home. Would love to know if it flew west acoss AL, MS, LA, TX, NM, then to CA and up or if it took a more northwestly route. If only they could talk to us....See MoreA new record for moonflower germination
Comments (15)Many Datura species can be difficult to grow from seed because some species take months to germinate and the seeds germinate at different times. Some of the slower or more difficult species seeds can be treated with gibberellic acid to improve germination speed and success, some nurseries sell pretreated seeds. I usually sow more seeds than I want and then only keep the seedlings that emerge first. Others can be given away or removed when they first germinate. Basically it just takes time so don't get discouraged....See Moreingrid_vc so. CA zone 9
