OT - please help to ID a snake!

Guys, I am sorry for OT, but I need an advice - urgently! I found a snake today in my garden. It seems to live under our gazebo. My DH wants to kill it, but I hate to kill a living thing without a strong reason... I tried to identify it by googling, but it turned out a hard thing to do.

I know that so many knowledgeable people visit this forum. Maybe, someone will be able to ID this thing?

Any advice about what to do with it would be also appreciated...

It does not look venomous to me. It is at least 1.5' long, probably 2' long and about 1" thick. We are in MD.

Looks like a common garter snake to me. Google Garter Snake and see what you think. If it is, he/she is a 'good guy' to have around.

Yep, That is a garter snake. They won't hurt ya, no teeth, and they will keep the mice away.

Just be careful mowing your grass, they weren't too afraid of my mower and I got one by accident : (.

hostas might be royal standard, lancifolia, small one is hard to say, August moon maybe, mediovariegata, clematis .... and Nelly Moser, first yellow evening primrose, and last yellow looks like lysymachia of some kind and first flower is nigella

I agrre with Pvick, looks like Pink Mallow. Be careful with it - produces lots of seedlings which have a very long tap root, so get rid of unwanted seedlings when in their early stages. Produces a lovely bloom in late June in my zone.

No worries. Your snake is an Eastern Garter Snake. It's checkers are more pronounced than is typical on the modal Eastern Garter and the stripes are less well-defined than is typical but it is in fact a garter snake. The lack of well defined stripes and the checkered pattern does kind of give it that gopher snake look.

I am glad we have a good guy :) Even my hubby got convinced. I hope this snake will eat more slugs and less earthworms in my garden. I've never seen a mouse here except gifts from our cat...
