I have not yet been able to obtain a copy of the full paper to see exactly which melanin biosynthesis inhibitors they utilized.

An interesting question (to me). Could we go to the store and buy a commercial skin whitening product and effectively treat blackspot?

I was e-mailed a full copy of the paper by a reader of this forum. Thank you.

The chemicals used were: "To study the effect of melanin biosynthesis inhibitors (MBIs) on D. rosae pathogenicity, the following MBIs: Carpropamid (Bayer CropScience, Monheim, Germany), pyroquilon (Pestanal; Sigma-Aldrich, Seelze, Germany), and tricyclazole (Dow Agro Sciences Ltd., Norfolk, UK) were used as aqueous solutions at concentrations of 100, 250 and 500 ppm in 0.03% non-ionic emulgator NP15 ? 1 ml of acetone."

Table 1 is titled "Efficacy of prophylactic application of melanin biosynthesis inhibitors of black spot disease of roses on rose leaves compared to trifloxystrobin"

A summary of part of that table is: After 14 days, observation of blackspot on Carpropamid treated rose leaves controlled 70.2 Â± 2.4* (n = 13) relative to setting Trifloxystrobin treated leaves at 100 Â± 4.0 (n = 11) and no treatment at 0* (n = 16)

In a short search I could not find any EPA information concerning Carpropamid.

Hi Raphael, Looks like a fungal infection , and what my C. iricolor had. I sprayed a Physan solution on it, several times and also kept it a good distance away from the other orchids for a couple of weeks, not watering heavily, and trying to keep the leaves, especially the affected part, as dry as possible, and with lots of air movement. My gigas has 2 new growths. I don't think it will bloom this summer. I'm also soaking it as we speak in a soap and oil solution, as it has the dreaded white scale, which is very likely on the roots! I'll repeat my 'Baby Love' anecdote. This rone was once touted as "the most disease-resistant rose in the world." It was planted in a no-spray garden maintained by the local rose society in Asheville. It was completely free of disease for a few years as it grew to 5 x 5'. So they planted another one about 50 yards away. Then the first plant got blackspot and defoliated 100% in a very short time. It became unable to maintain enough leaves to grow or bloom and was shovel-pruned. The interesting thing is that the second specimen didn't catch the killer strain. It's still disease free after a number of years. Perhaps the killer strain is still present on plants that were neighbors of BL I. If so, I could handle their foliage and carry the spores across the parking lot to infect BL II and destroy it. So wash your hands after visiting a rose garden. We probably also add additional races of BS when we add plants grown in various places.

Very true Henry. I might be reading into that short list too much. The reason it caught my eyes is because as many of my roses become more mature, I start to see differentiation among the disease-resistant roses in my garden. On average, my mature Easy Elegance roses seem to fare better than many of my Kordes toward Black Spot in early and mid-season. They all seem to succumb to BS (to various degrees) at this time of the year, but the cleanest two bushes in my no-spray garden (central NJ) in fall, not counting rugosas but including Knock-Outs, is Ping Lim's Como Park and the single pink Knock-Out.
