need help dividing dianthus desmond

watergrass

Hi everyone,

I have a three year old clump of Dianthus Desmond that are flowering very nicely. I did not know that I cold divide Dianthus. Would you please give me some instructions on how and when to do this? I did a search on the web site, and learned that I should wait until the plant finished flowering; then I can divide or take cutting or even trim 1/3 of the plant to keep it going, but I absolutely don't have any idea how to do any of that. When I dug up a plant, I only see one big root, so how do I divide this plant? And how do I take cutting? Is it the woody looking part above the soil level? PLEASE HELP!
