Small Tree with Black Berry

This species (two forward shrubs centered in the 1st photo) appears to be common in this area. The largest specimen is about 12 feet tall, and has small, smooth leaves (alternate) that are green and red. All of the other specimens I've seen have already dropped their fruit, but this one still has a few, purplish-black, rounded berries that are roughly 3/8" diameter. It typically grows along roads through our pine/hardwood forest. Can you name it?
