What's this I hear about needing to divide Shastas?

I have several large clumps of Shastas that I really don't want to lose because I mis-treated them. They aren't the 'wild' ones, but are large-but-tidy clumps of gorgeous large-bloomers and larger, dark-green foliage. Not the 'frilly looking' foliage of the wild ones, which I also have, but aren't concerned about because they reseed just fine in other areas of my yard.

Not sure which variety these others are, as I started them from unmarked seed several years ago.

I am in Z5, and they are just starting new growth for the season. Do I dig them up now, and simply divide into several clumps and replant further apart, or am I "cutting out" sections of the root-ball? Not sure what I'll be looking for when I do this.

Help. Thanks!
