Dr. Griffith Buck roses for coastal Calif.?

Anyone living near the coast of Ca. have favorite roses bred by Dr. Buck? I am interested in roses that are mildew and rust resistant. I already have Carefree Beauty own root and it's thriving and disease free so far. I am considering:

Frontier Twirl

Quietness

Distant Drums

All will be own root and grown in very large 20+ gallon plastic pots

I can't tell you how they would do for diseases in your area but I love both Quietness and Distant Drums myself. They both will black spot some for me but I can't recall seeing mildew. I'm not familiar with Frontier Twirl but it looks very pretty too.

We will be at a nursery Friday to see if we like the colors of Distant Drums and the shrub form of Quietness. I'm not sure about Frontier Twirl. Chamblee's introduced a number of Buck roses in 2010 to help preserve them in the rose community. There are a number from the Buck family that have never been in or have been out of commerce for a long time.

I live in Texas and love many of the Bucks mentioned - Quietness, Carefree Beauty, Earthsong, Prairie Breeze, Golden Unicorn, Folksinger, Pearlie Mae, Honeysweet [love the color on this one, unique!], Pipe Dreams, Square Dancer, Freckles, Countryman.....One I have not seen mentioned is Bright Melody. It is tall for me and blooms all the time with reddish blooms and is practically disease free. Sometimes I am regular with spraying, sometimes not.....this rose is always healthy. Also like Habanera, Malaguena......just pick some to try and see how they do. Chamblees has an excellent assortment. I am 2 hours from them and love to see their roses in bloom! Very healthy plants - reasonable prices.

Oh my, sorry to hear about the ankle. Ouch! I live in zone 5 in Omaha, NE, but I grew up in NW Iowa. I am guessing you have rich black dirt. I was so surprised moving to NE to learn that not everyone has that pretty dirt...lots of clay in the soil here & it is orange/brown. What part of NW IA are you in? I grow Distant Drums, had 2 but lost one over the winter a few years back. I think it may be one that isn't as hardy. I also have Country Dancer. It has thrived and is about 4 foot wide and 3 foot tall right now...It is about 8-9 years old. Most of my roses are grafted and I plant the graft deeply (got that great advice here). I have around 75-80 roses. I usually lose about one a year, though this year we had such a mild winter, they all did very well. I don't do a lot to winter protect with so many roses. I generally let the oak leaves blow around them & call it good. Of course I will baby a few of my absolute favorites! But if you only have a few, I would mound up dirt around the base in the fall.

I have quite a few of the Buck roses available today in commerce. I would not recommend many of them as a gift - certainly they have their attraction, but not all are hardy, or fragrant, or disease resistant, or any combination thereof. (Don't get me wrong, I am definitely a Buck rose fan...I just think that there is no way to blanket the entire collection with a general statement, and I've seen what different results different people across this country have had with them.) I must say that I recommend Quietness, however. Admittedly I resisted this rose for quite some time because of what I thought was a lot of 'hype' about it on these forums, but now that I've had it in my own garden a while I see why it was so highly touted. I can't tell you how it would do in New Jersey, but it is just wonderful here in northern Michigan. Quietness is one of Dr. Buck's best.

In all these years I still find it amazing how different rose can be for every one. Can add a couple. Folksinger own root grew and flowered beautifully here. She mildewed some awful thou and was shovel pruned. Quietness own root was very healthy. Had good flowering and strong scent. I moved it after a few years and that plant had an enormous root system. Rather like that of a large shrub that been in the ground for eons. Light pink is not my favorite color. So since she was a Jb favorite. I eventually got rid of it. Distant Drums if I remember correctly was own root. Got lots of black spot and not vigorous. Read as thin canes and short. Shovel prune in 3rd year. I'm trying 2 more this year Prairie Sunrise and Carefree Beauty. Really counting on these two maybe a pep rally when they come.

Distant drums is definitely a winner here. Haven't grown the other two you mentioned. I also like Spanish Rhapsody, but frankly, it needs to be sprayed unless you like mildew.

Quietness will get quite large in California unless you hack it back. Even in Ohio, it gets to about 7x6ft but is a nice and tidy upright shrub...it forms an excellent shrub like habit. I will try to get new pictures of it in it's more mature form this year.

This was back from 2010...it's larger now but you can get an idea of the habit with being upright then slightly arching out.
