Emergent plant on lake shore

Hi --

I hope someone can help me ID this plant. My son and I found it growing on a sandy shore (at the waterline) of a lake in south-central Texas yesterday. The leaves on our sample (pictured) are small, under 2" across, but the larger plants had leaves up to 3" across and on stems 6-12" high. The roots appear fuzzy and are barely rooted in the sand. The tuber-looking things in the photo are 2-3" long and contain gauze-like spongey material that holds water.

Thanks for any help -- we're stumped after consulting our plant books and some online plant ID websites!
